When will GTA 6 Online come out?

Is GTA 6 single-player only forever?

Rockstar’s own pre-order materials call it “a single-player experience,” and Sony’s PlayStation Blog FAQ answered the direct question, “Does Grand Theft Auto VI have any multiplayer modes or features?”, with the same line. There is no announced online mode, no name for one, and no date. What follows separates what was actually said from what is being inferred, because on this topic almost everything you will read is inference.

What Rockstar and Sony actually said

The wording appeared in three places at once when pre-orders opened on June 25, 2026:

the pre-order announcement itself,
the PlayStation Store and Xbox store listings,
a PlayStation Blog FAQ, which asked about multiplayer directly and answered that GTA 6 is a single-player experience.

That is a deliberate, repeated choice of words rather than an omission. It is also not a statement that an online mode will never exist. It says nothing about later, which is exactly why it has been read both ways.

Why this is a “when,” not an “if”

Take-Two has not announced an online mode, but everything it does commercially assumes one:

GTA Online is the recurring revenue. It has carried Take-Two’s results for over a decade, and the company reports on its performance every quarter.
GTA+ is still selling. Rockstar’s subscription is built entirely around online play, and a free month ships with every digital GTA 6 pre-order. Selling subscriptions into a game with no online mode makes no sense as an endpoint.
Rockstar bought the FiveM team. In August 2023 it acquired Cfx.re, the group behind the FiveM and RedM roleplay platforms it had spent years fighting. That is a purchase you make to own the infrastructure of a future online product, not to shut one down.

None of that is confirmation. It is the reason nobody serious believes GTA 6 stays single-player.

What the precedent actually says about timing

Rockstar has shipped a big single-player game and added the online mode afterwards twice:

Applied to November 19, 2026, a 14-day gap lands in early December and a 32-day gap in late December. That is arithmetic on two data points, not a schedule. Rockstar has published no roadmap for a GTA 6 online mode, and it has never pre-announced one.

The December rumor, rated

A leaker with a real Call of Duty track record posted that GTA 6’s online mode targets December 2026, alongside a claim that the PC version arrives in February 2027. It was posted without documentation and nobody has corroborated it. It is plausible precisely because it matches the precedent above, which is also what makes it cheap to guess. Separately, players inspecting the Xbox store package found GTA 6’s install split into parts labelled Story, Ultimate Edition Upgrade, Vintage Pack and Extra. That is consistent with an online component shipping as a separate download later, and it is also consistent with several other explanations. It is circumstantial, not an announcement.

What is genuinely unknown

Everything below has no official answer, and anyone giving you one is guessing:

The name. “GTA 6 Online” and “GTA Online 2” are fan shorthand.
Whether it is included with the game or sold separately, as GTA Online eventually was on PS5 and Xbox Series.
The monetisation, including whether Shark Cards or a GTA+ equivalent carry over.
Whether anything at all transfers from GTA Online.
Whether it supports crossplay, which no Rockstar title ever has.
Player counts per lobby, session structure, and whether roleplay servers are supported officially.

What happens to your current GTA Online account

Nothing, and that is on the record. How to tell a real announcement from noise

A GTA 6 online mode will be announced on the Rockstar Newswire first, and the store listings will change on the same day. Not on a leaker’s account, not in a YouTube thumbnail with a date on it. Until the Newswire says it, the honest answer to “when is GTA 6 Online” is that Rockstar has not said it is coming at all.
