Is GTA 6 Cross-Platform? Crossplay on PS5 and Xbox
No crossplay has been announced, and Rockstar has never shipped it in any game. Here is what 13 years of GTA Online tells you, and the difference between crossplay and cross-progression.

Rockstar has not announced crossplay for GTA 6, and it has never shipped crossplay in any of its games. There is also nothing to play together at launch: GTA 6 arrives on November 19, 2026 as a single-player experience with no announced online mode. Any site presenting a crossplay answer as confirmed is filling a gap that Rockstar has left empty.
The thirteen-year track record
GTA Online launched in 2013 and has never once let a PlayStation player into an Xbox session. Red Dead Online, launched five years later on newer infrastructure, did the same. Two games, two console generations, one consistent answer.
That matters more than any prediction, because crossplay is not a feature a studio forgets. It is an architectural choice made early, and Rockstar has made the same choice every time.
Crossplay and cross-progression are not the same question
They get merged constantly, and the answers differ:
| What it means | Rockstar’s history | |
|---|---|---|
| Crossplay | A PS5 and an Xbox player in the same session | Never shipped |
| Cross-progression | Your progress follows you to another platform you own | Only within a platform family, on console-generation upgrades |
In GTA Online, moving from PS4 to PS5 carried your character. Moving from PlayStation to Xbox never did. Neither behaviour has been announced for GTA 6, and the same distinction is worth keeping in mind for anything transferring out of GTA Online.
Why crossplay is unlikely here
These are structural reasons, not statements from Rockstar:
- Separate economies. GTA Online’s currency, prices and sales run per platform. Merging populations merges markets that were never built to be merged.
- The PC version arrives later. There is no dated PC release. By the time one exists, the console version is several content updates ahead, and a shared session has to reconcile two different builds.
- Cheating. PC lobbies have been GTA Online’s persistent problem. Opening console sessions to them imports that problem into the platform where it currently does not exist.
Console-to-console crossplay, PS5 with Xbox Series, is the version that would be technically straightforward. It is still not announced.
What would have to happen first
An online mode. Until Rockstar confirms one exists, crossplay is a question about a feature of a product that has not been acknowledged. The order of announcements will be: the online mode, then its structure, then, if ever, how sessions are populated.
That announcement lands on the Rockstar Newswire. We update this page the day it does.

Frequently asked
Is GTA 6 cross-platform?
No crossplay has been announced. There is also nothing to play across platforms at launch, because GTA 6 ships as a single-player experience with no announced online mode.
Can PS5 and Xbox players play GTA 6 together?
Not at launch, and there is no announcement about later. GTA Online has kept PlayStation and Xbox players in separate pools for its entire thirteen-year life, and Rockstar has never shipped crossplay in any title.
What is the difference between crossplay and cross-progression?
Crossplay means players on different platforms share a session. Cross-progression means one account carries your progress between platforms you own. They are separate features and Rockstar has announced neither for GTA 6.
Will GTA 6 have crossplay when the PC version arrives?
Unknown, and the PC version has no date either. A later PC release makes shared sessions harder rather than easier, because the two versions would be at different content stages.
Does my progress move if I buy GTA 6 on both consoles?
Nothing has been announced. In GTA Online, buying on a second platform family meant starting again, and only same-family upgrades carried progress.
