Will Your GTA Online Money and Cars Transfer to GTA 6?

Rockstar has confirmed no transfer of GTA Online characters, money, vehicles or rank into GTA 6. Here is the precedent, and the console-generation transfer people keep confusing it with.

Rockstar has confirmed no transfer of GTA Online characters, money, vehicles, properties or rank into GTA 6. Not a partial one, not a cosmetic one. It has also never done such a transfer in the history of the series. The best available answer is that a new game means a new start, and there is no announcement pointing the other way. GTA 6 does not even have an announced online mode yet, which is the part that makes any transfer question premature.

The confusion worth clearing up

People remember transferring their GTA Online character, and they are right. It happened twice:

  • 2014: Xbox 360 and PS3 to Xbox One and PS4.
  • 2022: the previous generation to Xbox Series X and S and PS5.

Both were the same game moving to new hardware. Your character went with you because it was still GTA Online, running on Rockstar’s servers, attached to your Social Club account.

GTA 6 is a different game. There is no precedent for progress moving between two Grand Theft Auto titles, and the transfers people cite as evidence are not examples of it.

What Rockstar has actually done between games

FromToWhat carried over
GTA IV multiplayerGTA Online (2013)Nothing
Red Dead Redemption multiplayerRed Dead Online (2018)Nothing
GTA Online, console generationsGTA Online, new hardwareCharacter, money, properties, vehicles

The pattern is consistent: within a game, everything moves. Between games, nothing does.

Why a full transfer is unlikely even if Rockstar wanted it

A new online economy needs an early game. Players who spent thirteen years accumulating money in GTA Online would arrive with balances that make the first hundred hours of progression meaningless, both for them and for everyone matched against them. It would also devalue exactly the thing Rockstar sells, which is the shortcut past that grind.

That is reasoning about design and business, not a Rockstar statement. Treat it as the reason to be skeptical of transfer rumors rather than as an answer.

The theory doing the rounds

A recurring fan reading is that GTA Online is quietly setting up a transfer through its story, with your character leaving San Andreas for Leonida. It is a nice idea and it is built entirely out of interpretation of in-game content. Rockstar has said nothing that supports it. We rate the specific claim on the leak tracker.

What this means for you right now

  • Play GTA Online normally. There is no announced benefit to hoarding money or vehicles for GTA 6.
  • Ignore transfer guides. Any video explaining how to move your character to GTA 6 is describing a process that does not exist.
  • Your account is safe either way. GTA Online keeps running after GTA 6 launches, so nothing you own disappears.

If Rockstar announces a transfer of any kind, it appears on the Newswire and this page changes the same day, with the announcement quoted rather than summarised.

Frequently asked

Does GTA Online money transfer to GTA 6?

Rockstar has confirmed nothing. It has never carried player progress from one Grand Theft Auto game into the next, and both GTA Online and Red Dead Online started every player from zero.

Can I transfer my GTA Online character to GTA 6?

Not announced, and no Rockstar game has ever done it. The transfers people remember were between console generations of the same game, not between two different games.

Should I stop spending my GTA Online money?

There is no announced reason to hoard it. Nothing has been confirmed as transferable, and a decade of accumulated wealth landing in a brand new economy is the kind of thing studios design against.

Do my Shark Card purchases carry over?

Nothing about purchases carrying into GTA 6 has been announced. Shark Cards buy GTA Online currency, which exists only inside GTA Online.

What does carry over then?

Your Rockstar Games Social Club account and your friends list, because those belong to the account rather than to a game. No in-game asset has been confirmed as transferable.

Where would Rockstar announce a transfer?

The Rockstar Newswire, and the store listings would change the same day. Until then, every transfer method described on YouTube is invented.
