What Happens to GTA Online When GTA 6 Launches?

Take-Two says GTA Online keeps running. Here is the quote, what your account keeps, and the Red Dead Online precedent that shows what "continued support" has meant in practice.

By Thomas Kraaibeek · Updated August 1, 2026

GTA Online keeps running. Take-Two chief executive Strauss Zelnick addressed it directly on the February 2026 earnings call: “I have every reason to believe we’ll continue to support GTA Online. There’s a great community that loves it, that stays engaged.” Nothing about your account, your money, your properties or your vehicles changes on November 19, 2026. What has never been announced is any way to take them into GTA 6.

What is actually confirmed

  • GTA Online continues. Stated by the publisher, on the record, in 2026.
  • Your progress stays where it is. It is attached to your Social Club account, and that account is not going anywhere.
  • GTA+ continues. It is a GTA Online subscription, and GTA Online is still there.

What “continued support” has meant before

This is the part worth reading slowly, because it is the difference between the headline and the outcome.

Red Dead Online was never shut down. It is still online today. But in July 2022 Rockstar published a post saying it had been “steadily moving more development resources towards the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series,” and that instead of the major themed content updates of previous years it would build on existing modes with smaller additions. The servers stayed up. The game stopped growing.

That is the realistic shape of what happens to a Rockstar online game when the studio’s attention moves on: it keeps running, it keeps selling, and the updates get thinner. Zelnick’s statement is about support, and support is not the same word as content.

GTA Online has one advantage Red Dead Online never had: it is the single biggest recurring revenue line in Take-Two’s business. That is a much stronger reason to keep feeding it than goodwill.

What this means depending on who you are

  • You play GTA Online and are not buying GTA 6. Nothing changes at launch. Expect the update cadence to be the thing to watch over 2027, not the servers.
  • You play GTA Online and are buying GTA 6. You will be playing two separate games with two separate economies. GTA 6 has no announced online mode at all yet.
  • You stopped playing years ago. Your account and everything on it is still there. Nothing expires.

The GTA+ detail worth knowing

Every digital GTA 6 pre-order includes a free month of GTA+. It is a rolling subscription, so the free month converts to a paid one at around $8 a month unless it is cancelled through the platform account that holds it. Rockstar has not clarified when the free month starts counting, which is the part to watch if you intend to use it and stop. Physical pre-orders do not include it. The rest of what each edition includes is on the pre-order guide.

Frequently asked

Is GTA Online shutting down when GTA 6 launches?

No. Take-Two chief executive Strauss Zelnick said in February 2026 that the company has "every reason to believe we'll continue to support GTA Online", citing a community that stays engaged.

Will I lose my GTA Online money, cars and properties?

No. They live on your Rockstar Games Social Club account and GTA Online keeps running. What has not been announced is any way to move them into GTA 6.

Will GTA Online still get updates after GTA 6?

Support has been confirmed, but the volume of that support has not. Red Dead Online is the cautionary precedent: it stayed online, and in July 2022 Rockstar said it was moving development resources to the next Grand Theft Auto and would stop shipping major themed updates.

Does my GTA+ subscription still work?

GTA+ is a GTA Online subscription and GTA Online continues, so it keeps working. Rockstar has not said whether GTA+ will ever cover anything in GTA 6.

Should I cancel GTA+ before GTA 6 launches?

That depends on whether you still play GTA Online, not on GTA 6. Worth knowing: the free month included with digital GTA 6 pre-orders is a rolling subscription, so it converts to a paid month unless it is cancelled.

Will GTA 5 servers close?

Nothing of the kind has been announced. Rockstar has kept GTA Online running for over a decade across three console generations, and Take-Two continues to report it as an active business.
