GTA 6 Gameplay: Every Confirmed Feature & Activity
GTA 6 has two playable protagonists, character switching, hunting and fishing, water traversal, in-game social media, and more. Everything Rockstar has officially confirmed.
By Thomas Kraaibeek · Updated September 15, 2026
Grand Theft Auto VI is built around two playable protagonists, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, with confirmed character switching between them. Beyond the story, Rockstar has officially shown hunting, fishing, water traversal, vehicle and character customization, and an in-game social-media culture set across the state of Leonida. Here is everything confirmed so far.
Two protagonists and character switching
GTA 6 has two playable leads. Lucia Caminos is the first female lead protagonist in a mainline Grand Theft Auto, and Jason Duval is her partner. Switching between them returns from GTA 5, and the story is framed as a criminal couple on the run, widely compared to Bonnie and Clyde.
The Extended Look on August 27, 2026 showed how it works. When the two are together the switch is instant. When they are apart there is a transition. Rockstar’s own framing, in an interview it sanctioned the same day, is that you can play as a couple or send them off separately. Whichever one you are not controlling acts on their own: driving while you shoot, or fighting alongside you.
Rockstar has also described Jason as an ex-military drug runner and Lucia as a fighter fresh out of prison, and says the relationship between them is shaped by how you play.
In the Trois Couleurs interview published the same day, Nelson also said the game is set over chapters, as a way the team pushes and pulls players through the map around tent-pole missions. That is a structure, not a published chapter list. He did not give a count or say whether chapters appear in a menu. The sentence, and what coverage added to it, is on GTA 6 story chapters.
The world of Leonida
The open world is the fictional state of Leonida, based on Florida, with named regions including Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga National Park. See the full map of Leonida and the locations database.
Confirmed activities
- Hunting in Mount Kalaga National Park, with wildlife such as deer and mountain lions.
- Fishing around the waterways and the national park area.
- Water traversal using airboats, boats, jet skis and kayaks across the swamps, keys and coast.
- A Classic Car Collection side task: track down abandoned project cars across Leonida and restore them.
- Recreational mini-games glimpsed in Trailer 2, including basketball, pool, mini-golf, diving and racing.
- Shown in the August 2026 Extended Look: scuba diving, jet skis, dirt bikes, street and rally racing, weightlifting, e-scooters, playable arcade cabinets, salons, clubs and in-game television.
What the Extended Look confirmed
Rockstar showed GTA 6 gameplay for the first time on August 27, 2026, in a film of 26 minutes and 49 seconds captured on a PlayStation 5. The systems below come from that showing and from the interview Rockstar sanctioned alongside it. Full detail on everything Rockstar showed.
- Combat is rebuilt. Lock-on aiming is off by default, you carry four guns rather than an armoury, police no longer appear on the minimap, and a slow-motion ability called Focus replaces them as the way to find threats. Full detail on GTA 6 combat.
- A six-star wanted level, the first in the series since Chinatown Wars in 2009.
- A heat system rather than a radius. Police have to witness a crime or have an alarm tripped before you are wanted at all. After that they work from a description: your appearance, your clothing, your vehicle, whether you were caught on camera. Icons under the stars show what they have. Changing clothes, changing hair, hiding the car, wearing a mask during the crime or splitting Jason and Lucia up all reduce what they know, which is not the same as reducing the star count. Heat is also regional: an area stays hot on the map after you leave.
- The Criminal Profile. Rockstar’s morality system, and it says explicitly that this is not Red Dead Redemption 2’s honor, because there is no right or wrong in it, only what sort of criminal you are. Violence a mission forces on you does not necessarily move it. Consistent unnecessary violence does. On screen it appeared once, as an angel icon after Jason chose Pet from a Scold, Pet or Study prompt on a dog. Rockstar never explained the icon, and “karma” is the games press naming it.
- A body that changes with what you do. Food affects weight, exercise builds visible muscle, and lack of sleep shows in the face. The San Andreas system returning after 22 years.
- An optional relationship. The romance between Jason and Lucia is built by spending time together outside missions and confers no gameplay advantage. Ignoring your partner’s messages can damage it.
- Vehicle security tiers. A phone app scans a parked car for locks, alarm and tracker, and tells you what it is worth. Older cars open with a slim jim, prestige cars need a key cloner, and some are out of reach until later in the story. A fence buys what you steal.
- Conversation with NPCs through held-trigger prompts, with greet, taunt, defuse and provoke options. The crowd behind that system, including the 600,000 animations and the office Rockstar built for it, is on GTA 6 NPCs. Aiming a weapon without firing can end a confrontation without drawing police attention.
- Harder driving on purpose. Streets are narrower and traffic is denser, and Rockstar says that at three stars in the city, escaping on foot is often better than escaping by car.
- Sprint on L3. A creator invited to the same Rockstar North previews says the default run input is now a click of the left stick, not tapping X or A. Rockstar has published no layout. Hold versus toggle, and whether the old mapping survives in settings, have not been said. The write-up.
Two things the film did not show were answered in the previews around it. The console build runs at 30 frames per second, and there is no full first-person mode at launch, only first-person aiming with certain weapons. Both came from the Rockstar North session rather than from a Rockstar publication, and both have their own page: frame rate and first person.
Rockstar itself has published no frame rate, no performance modes, no install size and no PC version.
A note on sourcing. Some of the above was visible in the film and some of it was described by Rockstar staff at hands-off preview sessions and in two magazine features on the same day. Both are Rockstar, and neither is someone playing the game in public. Which is which is set out in our write-up.
Customization
Vehicle customization returns through in-world mod shops such as Rideout Customs. Character personalization is confirmed too, with the Ultimate Edition reveal citing tattoos from a real artist collective plus clothing and styling options.
In-game social media
Trailer 2 shows an in-game phone and social-media culture, complete with vertical short-form videos, likes and comments, and influencer and meme content woven into the world.
That is also where Rockstar has said the satire points. Asked about Trump and covid in the August 2026 interview run, Rob Nelson said very specific political issues and memes date fast, and that the studio aims at broader targets instead. What was said, by whom, and what it does not rule out is on is GTA 6 political.
Single-player at launch
Rockstar officially describes GTA 6 as a single-player experience, and no new online mode has been announced for the November 19, 2026 launch. GTA Online continues to run separately. What was actually said, why an online mode is still a question of when rather than if, and what the December rumor is worth are all on GTA 6 Online.
One widely-shared figure, “700+ enterable interiors,” is rumored and comes from insider reports, not from Rockstar. We label it as unconfirmed.
Frequently asked
Can you switch between characters in GTA 6?
Yes. Switching between the two protagonists, Jason and Lucia, is confirmed and returns from GTA 5. The August 2026 Extended Look showed it working: the switch is instant when the two are together, and there is a transition when they are apart.
Is GTA 6 single-player or online?
Rockstar describes GTA 6 as a single-player experience at launch, and Sony's PlayStation Blog FAQ answered the multiplayer question the same way. No online mode has been announced for the November 19, 2026 release, and GTA Online continues separately.
Does GTA 6 have a first-person mode?
Not a full one at launch. The preview sessions at Rockstar North reported that GTA 6 ships without a complete first-person mode, keeping first-person only as an aiming view for certain weapons. GTA 5 added a full mode fourteen months after launch, and Red Dead Redemption 2 shipped with one.
Can you go hunting and fishing in GTA 6?
Yes. Hunting is confirmed in Mount Kalaga National Park in northern Leonida, and fishing is confirmed around the waterways.
How do you sprint in GTA 6?
The default is L3, a click of the left analog stick, according to a creator who sat through a Rockstar North preview. That would replace 25 years of tapping X or A. Rockstar has published no control scheme, and nobody has said whether the old mapping remains as an option.
