Nelson said GTA 6 is set over chapters. He did not describe Red Dead 2's chapter list

In the Trois Couleurs interview published August 27, Rob Nelson said the game is set over chapters as a way the team moves players through the map. Coverage this week treated that as Rockstar confirming a Red Dead Redemption 2 chapter system. He did not give a count, a pause-menu chapter list, or that comparison.

Rob Nelson said Grand Theft Auto VI is “set over chapters.” The line is in the Trois Couleurs interview published on August 27, 2026, the same sitting that produced the answers on two protagonists, the 2015 start date, and why topical satire dates. GameRant isolated it on September 13. The quote is real. The Red Dead Redemption 2 comparison around it is the press, not him.

The sentence, in the paragraph it came from

Nelson was asked how Rockstar builds the flow of the world: map first, then a story to move the player across it, or the other way around. He described Rupert Humphries, Rockstar’s senior vice president of narrative, delivering “a page and a half of the story,” the pair starting in one place, a beat moving them, a stay, then another move. Missions and set-pieces get built around those beats. Then:

This one is going to be the catalyst that is going to move them from this part of the game to that part of the game. The game is set over chapters, which also help us figure out how the game is going to move. And then, once we have these sorts of tent-pole missions with some different key plot points that are going to happen, I guess then it’s sort of “How is this going to work?” And then, “What if the player does something different, can we allow for it, if the player wants to go off the rails?”

That is the whole confirmation. Chapters are how the team is structuring movement through Leonida. They sit next to tent-pole missions and a question about letting the player go off the rails, which is the opposite of a locked corridor.

He did not say:

  • How many chapters there are. Red Dead Redemption 2 had six plus two epilogues. That number has been attached to GTA 6 in write-ups this week. It is not in the interview.
  • Whether chapters appear in the pause menu, as named acts, or only as an internal outline.
  • Whether they split by protagonist, or wrap Jason and Lucia as a pair.
  • That GTA 5 had no structure. It had a mission list. It did not label the story as chapters. That is a real difference. It is not a thing Nelson named.

Why this week, and why it still matters

The interview has been public since August 27. We used it for the satire answer and for how the couple was chosen. The chapters line sat in a process answer and did not become a headline until GameRant pulled it out. That is a miss on our side, not a new sitting.

It still changes one page. Our length write-up said there was no chapter or act structure. That sentence is now wrong. Nelson has said there is a chapter structure. He has not said what a player will see of it.

The same claim showed up as a leak more than a year earlier. Kotaku, on September 2, listed “the game is split up into chapters like RDR2” among June 2025 details from the account GameRoll that later matched what Rockstar showed. The “like RDR2” half is still the leak’s wording. Nelson confirmed chapters. The tracker entry is GTA 6 is set over chapters.

What it does not do to the open world

Nelson spent the rest of that answer on the opposite problem: once the tent-pole missions exist, can the game allow the player to do something else. The Trois Couleurs preview, in the same piece, has him opening the map and saying that after the Keys opening you can go anywhere. Chapters, in his mouth, are a way to push and pull people through a map they can otherwise wander.

That is closer to Red Dead Redemption 2’s use of chapters as geography and story pressure than it is to a linear campaign. It is also not a specification. Until someone finishes the game, or Rockstar publishes a chapter list, the supported facts stop at the sentence above.
