What wildlife is confirmed in GTA 6?

Game Informer's September 29, 2026 cover story says Leonida has more than 170 animal species on land, in the air and in the sea. It names flamingos, manatees, pelicans, alligators, green iguanas, cane toads, feral cats and rhesus macaques. Trailers had already shown several of those, plus sharks, dolphins, turtles, key deer, wild pigs and dogs. Rockstar has not published a full species list. Some animals can be tracked as Rare, Discoverable or Legendary, and those identities are secret.

Is hunting confirmed in GTA 6?

No. Rockstar's Mount Kalaga copy names hunting, and a Game Informer screenshot shows Jason near deer with a rifle. Neither is a hunting system. The magazine confirms you can track some rare animals. It does not say you hunt them.

Can you go fishing in GTA 6?

Fishing has not been officially confirmed as a minigame. Rockstar's Mount Kalaga copy names it, and it fits the setting. No trailer, the GTA VI website, or the September 29 Game Informer pages shows you fishing.

Does GTA 6 have a living ecosystem?

The trailers show wildlife in daily life, from a gator in a pool to flamingos over the wetlands. Game Informer adds rendering detail: iridescence, bioluminescence, translucency, feather types, and new fur. The depth of the animal AI behind that is still not confirmed.

GTA 6 Wildlife and Activities: Animals of Leonida

Leonida has more than 170 animal species, Game Informer reported on September 29, 2026, and the trailers had already put alligators in swimming pools and flamingos over the wetlands. Most of the activities built around that ecosystem are still unconfirmed. This page separates animals Rockstar or Game Informer has named, animals only seen in a trailer, and things you still cannot assume you can do.

What Game Informer added on September 29

Two free pages from issue 382 are the first time a number has been attached to the roster.

More than 170 species across land, air and sea. Several have never appeared in a Rockstar game. The free page does not print the full list.
Newly named, versus our trailer roster: cane toads, feral cats and rhesus macaques. Game Informer notes that Florida really does have the monkeys. Flamingos, manatees, pelicans, alligators and green iguanas were already on screen.
Rendering, building on Red Dead Redemption: iridescence, bioluminescence, translucency, feather types, and new hair and fur for coats and pelts. That is how they look. It is not a published animal-AI system.
Tracking: some animals are categorized Rare, Discoverable or Legendary, and you can track them. The identities of the harder ones are secret. The page does not say what tracking pays, or that it is a hunt.

Wildlife confirmed in the trailers

Every animal below has been spotted in official Rockstar trailer footage for GTA 6, set in the state of Leonida. Community “nature watchers” have catalogued them frame by frame. Where Game Informer has since named the same animal, that is noted. Rockstar itself has still not published a species list.

Land animals

Key deer, the small deer native to the Florida Keys, grazing in wooded areas.
Wild pigs rooting through brush.
Dogs, seen as both strays and pets around the city.
Feral cats, named by Game Informer on September 29. The trailers showed dogs. A feral cat is a separate animal, and one is not evidence of the other.
Rhesus macaques, named by Game Informer on September 29. The magazine notes that Florida really does have them. They are not in the trailer catalogue above.

Sea life

Tiger sharks in open water.
Bottlenose dolphins off the coast.
Loggerhead sea turtles near the shallows.
West Indian manatees, briefly visible in a single canal shot.

Birds

American flamingos, shown in large flocks over the wetlands.
Brown pelicans along the waterfront.
Herons wading in the shallows.
Gulls over the beaches and marinas.

Reptiles

American alligators, the most prominent animal in Trailer 2. One is dragged out of a backyard pool, another strolls into a store.
Green iguanas, the invasive lizard that has become a real Florida fixture. Game Informer names them again.

Also named on September 29

Cane toads, named by Game Informer and not in the trailer catalogue. They are amphibians, which is why they are not filed with the reptiles above.

That is the confirmed roster: trailer sightings plus the animals Game Informer names. It is not 170 entries. Other creatures named only in leaks stay unconfirmed.

A living ecosystem, or set dressing?

How these animals appear is what stands out. A gator in a pool, a manatee in a canal, flamingos scattering over the Grassrivers wetlands: the trailers frame wildlife as part of daily life in Leonida, not a fenced-off safari zone. It reads like Rockstar wants the world to feel alive on its own, whether or not a player is watching.

What that means mechanically is still open. Reports of migration patterns, predator and prey behavior, and animals reacting to weather and time of day are expectations and leaks, not confirmed features. Rockstar has not detailed the animal AI. The September 29 rendering notes (iridescence, bioluminescence, fur, feathers) describe surfaces, not behavior.

Activities: what the trailers actually show

Leonida is built for water. Trailer 2 shows the coast, the Leonida Keys, and the wetlands as places you move through, not just backdrops.

On the water

Official footage shows boats, jet skis, airboats, and kayaks crossing the swamps, canals, and open sea. Water traversal is one of the clearest gameplay elements in the trailers. See the vehicles database for what has been shown on wheels and on water, and the locations database for the places they connect.

Beaches and nightlife

Ocean Beach, modeled on Miami’s South Beach, is the visual signature of Vice City. Trailer 2 shows the beach and nightlife the city is known for, including brief club scenes kept as tone-setting rather than anything explicit. Rockstar has not detailed which venues are enterable or what you can do inside them.

Hunting and fishing: named, not demonstrated

This is the most common misconception about GTA 6. Hunting and fishing are widely expected, and Rockstar has not shown either as a system you can start.

Rockstar’s own copy for Mount Kalaga National Park promises hunting, fishing and off-road trails. That is brochure language. The regions page has always treated it that way. Official screenshots already show a hunter with a scoped rifle and a double-barrel shotgun leveled at an alligator. On September 29, outlets described one of Game Informer’s 12 new screenshots as Jason in open country with a rifle, near deer. A weapon and an animal in the same frame is the same kind of evidence as those earlier shots.

The new confirmed piece next to it is tracking. Rare, Discoverable and Legendary animals can be tracked, and their identities are secret. Game Informer’s free wildlife page does not say you kill them, skin them or mount them. An RDR2-style hunting loop is still the rumor on the tracker. Fishing has even less: the Mount Kalaga sentence, and no footage of a rod.
