GTA 6 Frame Rate: 30 FPS on Console, and Why 60 Is Unlikely

Rockstar North's head of development says GTA 6 runs at 30 frames per second on console. What that quote actually covers, what Digital Foundry measured in the Extended Look, and why a 60 FPS mode is the hard part.

By Thomas Kraaibeek · Updated August 29, 2026

GTA 6 runs at 30 frames per second on console. That comes from Rob Nelson, head of development at Rockstar North, speaking during a hands-off preview at the studio. It is the first frame rate figure attached to a named Rockstar person, and it arrived on August 27, 2026, the day of the Extended Look.

Two things it is not. It is not a Rockstar publication: no Newswire post, no store listing and no specification sheet carries a frame rate. And it is not stated as final. Nelson framed it as where the build sits now, and when he was asked whether a 60 FPS option would come at launch or later, he said the technical team would have to weigh in.

So the honest version is narrower than the headline: a senior Rockstar developer says the current console build runs at 30, and the company has committed to nothing.

Where the number actually came from

This matters more than usual, because the chain is three links long and most coverage collapsed it into one.

The roomDavy Jones, Brazilian creator at Gameplayrj and Flow GamesWatched Nelson play at Rockstar North in Edinburgh for more than two hours, and interviewed him
The publicationFlow Games, August 27, 2026Published the write-up, by Bruno Micali, from what Jones brought back

That middle row is worth dwelling on, because it is not the same session most outlets attended. The general press demonstration ran about 30 minutes. Jones was there alone, reported as the only Brazilian invited, for over two hours plus a long interview. Whatever else is true of this chain, the person at the end of it had more time with Nelson than almost anyone.

The Portuguese is worth having, because the tense in it is doing work:

De acordo com Rob Nelson, Líder de Desenvolvimento e Co-diretor da Rockstar North, neste período de desenvolvimento, os consoles estão rodando o jogo com 30 quadros por segundo.

“In this development period, the consoles are running the game at 30 frames per second.” Present tense, about a build, in August, for a game that ships in November. Every English rewrite that turned this into “Rockstar confirms GTA 6 is 30 FPS” dropped the qualifier that the man saying it put in.

Nelson also said he did not have details on resolution or ray tracing. Keep that in mind for the next section, because a lot of headlines gave him a resolution anyway.

The “4K at 30” headline is half wrong

On August 27 a claim spread that Rockstar North had confirmed 4K at 30 FPS. The 30 is real. The 4K was never said by anyone at Rockstar, and the only Rockstar person asked about resolution answered that he did not have the details.

Digital Foundry then measured the film itself, and the answer is more interesting than either number:

  • The Extended Look renders at native 1440p, with no dynamic resolution scaling.
  • It is upscaled to 4K by a spatial method, not by a modern temporal upscaler such as FSR 2 or a TAA based technique. Digital Foundry describes the result as soft, with visible geometric aliasing and shimmer on fine detail.
  • The 30 FPS output is close to locked, with only very occasional single dropped frames.
  • Ray-traced reflections and ray-traced global illumination are both in use. The reflections are low resolution, and Digital Foundry notes they can look noisy and smeared next to older screen-space techniques in still comparisons.

So the film was delivered in 4K and rendered at 1440p. Both halves of the headline were reported as if they were Rockstar specifications. Neither is.

One caveat on all of it. Digital Foundry analysed a compressed video of a PlayStation 5 capture, not a retail build on a test bench. Its conclusions are strong evidence about that capture and an informed guess about the shipping game. Rockstar can still change the renderer between now and November 19.

We got one half of this right and missed the other. On the night we wrote that the 4K claim had no official basis, and that holds up. We also wrote that Rockstar had published no frame rate, which is still literally true and was already the wrong emphasis, because a named Rockstar developer had given one hours earlier in a preview we had not yet read. That line is corrected.

Why 60 FPS is the hard part

The reason is not polish and it is not the GPU. It is the simulation.

A 60 FPS mode means finishing every frame in 16.7 milliseconds instead of 33.3. Rendering can often be cut down to fit by dropping resolution or effects. The other half of the budget cannot: the traffic, the crowds, the police logic, the physics and the world state all run on the CPU, and they cost roughly the same whether you draw the frame at 1080p or 4K.

Digital Foundry’s verdict is that a 60 FPS console version is extremely unlikely, because there is no way to recover enough GPU and particularly CPU time for a 16.7 millisecond update without compromising the world itself. Rockstar has built a game whose headline features, the crowds and the police who track a description of you, are exactly the expensive kind.

That is analysis rather than an announcement. But it is analysis that agrees with the only Rockstar statement on the subject, which is that the current build runs at 30 and 60 needs a conversation with the technical team.

PS5 Pro, Series X and Series S

Rockstar has confirmed nothing per platform. Everything below is what the hardware makes likely, and none of it is official.

ConsoleWhat is known
PlayStation 5The Extended Look was captured here. Measured at 1440p, 30 FPS
PlayStation 5 ProNo announced enhancements. Stronger GPU, near-identical CPU
Xbox Series XNo capture released, no measurement, no statement
Xbox Series SNo capture released. The weakest current-gen target

The PS5 Pro question is the one people ask most, so it is worth being precise. The Pro has a substantially stronger GPU and Sony’s PSSR upscaling, and those are the right tools for a sharper image or a more stable one. Its CPU is close to the base PS5’s. If the ceiling on frame rate is CPU-bound, and Digital Foundry’s reading is that it largely is, then a Pro is a good bet for better resolution and a poor bet for double the frame rate. Our console requirements page covers what each machine can and cannot do.

The Series S has the least headroom of the four and the least public information. Nobody outside Rockstar has seen it run.

What has not been said at all

Worth naming, because the gaps get filled with invention:

  • No 40 FPS mode. A 40 FPS option on a 120 Hz display is a real technique other current-gen games use. Nobody at Rockstar has mentioned one.
  • No VRR or unlocked frame rate statement.
  • No per-console specification of any kind.
  • No resolution, beyond Digital Foundry’s measurement of one video.
  • No PS5 Pro feature list.
  • No install size or streaming detail, which is a related performance question. See file size.

What about PC?

There is no PC version and no date for one, so there is no PC frame rate. It is still the most likely place a high frame rate GTA 6 eventually shows up, because Rockstar’s PC ports of GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 both uncapped frame rates and added graphics options the console versions did not have. That is a pattern, not a promise, and the port itself is unannounced. We track it on the PC port page.

What would change this page

We will rewrite this the moment any of the following exists:

  • A Rockstar Newswire post or store listing with a frame rate or a performance mode.
  • A PlayStation or Xbox product page listing modes, which is usually where this appears first.
  • A Digital Foundry analysis of retail hardware, after launch.
  • Any further on-record comment from Rockstar staff, which is how the current number arrived.

Until then the accurate sentence is the one at the top: a senior Rockstar developer says the current console build runs at 30, and the company has committed to nothing. GTA 6 arrives November 19, 2026.

Frequently asked

What frame rate does GTA 6 run at?

30 frames per second on console. Rob Nelson, head of development at Rockstar North, said so during a preview at the studio, published by the Brazilian outlet Flow Games on August 27, 2026. He described it as where the game sits in this development period, not as a shipping specification, and Rockstar itself has published no number.

Will GTA 6 have a 60 FPS performance mode?

Undecided, and nobody has ruled it out. Asked about a 60 FPS option at launch or later, Nelson said the technical team would have to weigh in. Digital Foundry's analysis of the Extended Look concludes a 60 FPS console version is extremely unlikely, because the CPU cost of the simulation leaves no realistic path to a 16.7 millisecond frame.

Is GTA 6 4K?

The Extended Look was output at 4K, but it was not rendered there. Digital Foundry measured a native 1440p image with no dynamic resolution scaling, upscaled to 4K by a simple spatial method rather than a modern temporal upscaler. Nelson said explicitly that he did not have resolution details, so no official resolution exists.

Does the PS5 Pro run GTA 6 at 60 FPS?

Nothing has been announced. Rockstar has confirmed no PS5 Pro enhancements at all. The Pro has a stronger GPU than a base PS5 but a nearly identical CPU, and frame rate in a simulation this dense is mostly a CPU problem, so a Pro is unlikely to simply double it.

Did Rockstar confirm 4K at 30 FPS?

No. That headline circulated on August 27 and it is half wrong. The 30 came from Nelson and is real, with the development-build caveat attached. The 4K did not come from Rockstar at all, and the one Rockstar person asked about resolution said he did not have the details.

What frame rate does GTA 6 run at on Xbox Series X and Series S?

Rockstar has published nothing per platform. The 30 FPS remark was about consoles generally, and the footage everyone has analysed was captured on a PlayStation 5. No Series X or Series S capture has been released or measured.

Will GTA 6 have a 40 FPS mode or VRR support?

Neither has been mentioned by anyone at Rockstar. A 40 FPS mode on a 120 Hz display is a middle option some current-gen games offer, and unlocked frame rates with VRR are another, but both are press speculation here. Treat any claim otherwise as invented until Rockstar publishes a specification.

Will GTA 6 run at 60 FPS on PC?

There is no PC version and no announced date, so there is no PC frame rate. Rockstar's past PC ports have uncapped frame rates, so a future port is the most likely place a high frame rate GTA 6 appears, but nothing about it is confirmed.
