GTA 6 Combat: Focus, Free Aim, and a Two-Gun Limit

Lock-on aiming is off by default, the weapon wheel is gone, and police no longer show on the minimap. What the Focus ability does, where every one of these claims comes from, and what Rockstar has not said.

By Thomas Kraaibeek · Updated September 11, 2026

GTA 6 turns off lock-on aiming by default, caps you at four guns, takes police off the minimap, and gives you a slow-motion ability called Focus to find them again. Taken together those are the biggest changes to how a Grand Theft Auto plays since the series went 3D, and all four come from the same place: the hands-off preview sessions Rockstar North ran in August 2026.

Read that sourcing line carefully, because it applies to this entire page. Nobody outside Rockstar has played GTA 6. Rob Nelson, head of development at Rockstar North, drove the demonstration. Creators and press, including TGG and Kinda Funny, watched it. What follows is what they reported seeing somebody else do.

The Focus ability

Focus is the new mechanic, and it does two unrelated jobs.

In a fight, it slows time and puts a shot map over whatever you are aiming at:

ZoneWhat it means
RedLethal. Head, heart, the places a hit kills
YellowNon-lethal. Knees, hands, the places a hit incapacitates or disarms

Aimed at a vehicle, the same overlay picks out components instead: engine, fuel tank, tyres.

Out of a fight, it is how you find people. Police and enemies no longer appear on the minimap, which is the change that makes Focus structural rather than optional. Focus reveals them through walls. A mechanic that would have been a nice extra in GTA 5 is, in GTA 6, the replacement for a HUD element the series has had since 2001.

It is not Dead Eye

The comparison everyone reaches for is Red Dead Redemption 2, and it breaks on the important part. Dead Eye lets you mark targets and then takes the shots for you. Focus does not fire. It slows the world and tells you where to hit. You still pull every trigger.

That distinction is the whole design argument. Rockstar removed the aim system that killed for you and added an ability that tells you where to aim, which is a different trade from the one Red Dead made.

The meter

Focus runs off its own gauge, shown in the Extended Look HUD alongside health and stamina. Reporting on that footage describes it as a purple bar marked with an eye icon. It drains as you use it and refills two ways: performing well in combat, and consumables found in the world. A green smoothie shown in the footage topped up stamina and focus together.

Treat the meter’s exact colour and icon as a read of official footage rather than as something Rockstar labelled. The behaviour is from the previews. The HUD description is from people pausing the video.

Aiming: lock-on is off by default

This is the change most likely to affect how the game feels in your hands.

Nelson’s account, as reported from the sessions, is that GTA 6 ships with less lock-on than previous GTA games, starting you in free aim with a small amount of stickiness rather than snapping you onto a nearby target. Aim stickiness and free-aim behaviour are adjustable in the options.

What has not been said is whether the old full lock-on can be switched back on. “Tunable stickiness” and “classic auto-aim as a toggle” are different promises, and only the first one has been reported. If you play GTA on a controller and rely on lock-on, that is the open question, and nobody has answered it.

Guns feel heavier, and you carry fewer

Recoil is up. Assault rifles are described as rewarding controlled bursts and tap-firing, where GTA 5 let you hold the trigger and stay accurate. Pistols fire as fast as you can press. Optional kill cameras are in, in the Red Dead and Max Payne pattern.

The weapon wheel is capped. The carry limit is:

  • Two concealed handguns, carried without drawing attention.
  • Two long guns, of which only one fits on your back. The second has to be held in your hands.

Everything else lives in a vehicle trunk, and only personal vehicles keep weapons permanently. In practice that means you pick a loadout before a job rather than carrying an armoury, which is the same move Red Dead Redemption 2 made away from GTA 5’s magic pockets.

Nelson gave the reason, in an interview with TGG:

We don’t feel that works any longer at this resolution with the behavioral sophistication we need from our population now.

That is a crowd argument, not a realism one. Which brings up the part that connects this page to the rest of the game.

The crowd is part of the combat system

Carrying a long gun in your hands makes NPCs move away from you, and they may call the police. A long gun on your back does not. So the carry limit is not only an inventory rule, it is an input into how the world reacts to you, and it ties directly into the wanted system’s evidence model: the police have to be told something before they come for you.

Two more things from the same sessions point the same way:

  • Aiming a weapon without firing can end a confrontation. No violent crime happened, so no police attention follows.
  • Suppressive fire works. Deliberately missing to intimidate is a described tactic, covered in our piece on suppressive fire and the non-lethal options.

The yellow zones in Focus fit into this. A game that models what witnesses saw, and gives you a way to disarm somebody instead of killing them, is building the two halves of the same system. What the NPCs page covers about the crowd is the other side of this page.

Melee and movement

Smaller, and still from the same previews:

  • Melee has blocking and timed parries, which the series has not had in this form.
  • Sprint moves to L3, a click of the left stick, after 25 years of tapping X or A. Covered separately in the sprint mapping change.
  • You can set a default movement pace: walk, faster walk, or jog.

What Rockstar has not said

The gap between “reported from a demo” and “confirmed” is wide here, and this is where it sits:

  • Whether classic lock-on returns as an option. The single most consequential unknown on this page.
  • Any Focus meter numbers. No duration, no drain rate, no refill rate, no cap.
  • Whether Focus is upgradeable, or tied to the stat system the leaks pointed at.
  • Whether the two protagonists differ in combat. Nothing has been said about Jason and Lucia having different abilities, and the assumption that they do is an assumption.
  • Anything from a player. The previews were hands-off. Recoil “feeling heavier” is somebody’s read of footage they watched, not of a controller they held.
  • Whether any of it survives to launch. Rockstar has ten weeks and has changed systems late before.

Rockstar has published no control scheme, no combat documentation, and no official Focus explainer. The official page does not mention any of this.

Frequently asked

What is the Focus ability in GTA 6?

A slow-motion state that overlays a shot map on what you are aiming at. Red zones are lethal, such as the head and heart. Yellow zones incapacitate or disarm instead, such as knees and hands. It also highlights vehicle parts and reveals police through walls. It runs off its own meter and it does not fire for you.

Is GTA 6 Focus the same as Dead Eye from Red Dead Redemption 2?

No. Dead Eye lets you paint targets and then fires the shots automatically. Focus slows time and shows you where to hit, but you take every shot yourself. It is closer to a targeting overlay than to an auto-kill.

Does GTA 6 have auto-aim?

Not as the default. The preview sessions in August 2026 reported that lock-on is switched off out of the box, replaced by free aim with a small amount of stickiness that you can tune in the options. Nobody has said whether full classic lock-on can be restored.

How many weapons can you carry in GTA 6?

Two concealed handguns, plus two long guns of which only one sits on your back and the second has to be carried in hand. Everything else goes in a vehicle trunk. The unlimited weapon wheel from GTA 5 is gone.

Do police show up on the GTA 6 minimap?

No. Police and enemies were reported as removed from the minimap in the August 2026 preview sessions. Finding them is what the Focus ability is for, which is why it is a detection tool and not only a combat one.

Has anyone actually played GTA 6 combat?

Nobody outside Rockstar. Every detail on this page comes from hands-off sessions at Rockstar North in August 2026, demonstrated by Rob Nelson and watched by creators and press. None of them held a controller.
