GTA 6 maps sprint to L3, ending 25 years of tapping X, a previewer says

Italian creator MikeShowSha, invited to Rockstar North around the Extended Look, says the default sprint input is now a click of the left stick. Rockstar has published no control scheme. Whether L3 is a hold or a toggle, and whether tap-X survives as an option, has not been said.

The default sprint button in Grand Theft Auto VI is L3, a click of the left analog stick, according to a creator who sat through a Rockstar North preview. That would end the series habit of tapping X on PlayStation or A on Xbox, which has been the 3D-era default for about 25 years.

The source is MikeShowSha, an Italian YouTuber invited to the Edinburgh studio around the Extended Look. He answered viewer questions in a Q&A posted on September 1. Eurogamer, GameSpot and Push Square all carried the L3 mapping from that video. Rockstar has still published no controller layout of any kind.

This is the same preview cycle that produced the 30 FPS line. It is not a leak.

What was actually said

The mapping is the whole of the confirmed part:

  • Default sprint is L3. Click the left stick. That is how most third-person and first-person games have worked for more than a decade.
  • The old default was a face button. In GTA 5 you hold X or A for a faster jog and tap it to sprint. Red Dead Redemption 2 kept the face-button run. Some Rockstar games offered alternate schemes. The default did not move.

MikeShowSha was in the building. He was not reading a Newswire post. The press sessions around the showing were hands-off: Rob Nelson, Rockstar North’s head of development, played and took requests. Creators describing what they saw are a step removed from a Rockstar publication, and that is the right weight to give this.

What nobody has said

Three things the coverage is already filling in, and should not:

ClaimStatus
L3 is the default sprint inputReported by an invited previewer, widely repeated
L3 is a toggle, or a holdNot said. Eurogamer described how L3 works in other games
Tap-X remains as a settings optionNot said. Push Square expects a remap because the previews talked about customisation. That is a guess
Rockstar has published a control schemeNo

If you are rewriting muscle memory this week, you are doing it on a previewer’s answer, not on a spec sheet.

The second mapping, which travelled less far

Dexerto, covering the same Q&A, also reported that the face button is moving to emergency brake, so you can fire from a moving car the way Red Dead 2 lets you shoot from a horse. In GTA 5 the handbrake sits on R1 / RB.

Eurogamer, GameSpot and Push Square did not carry that second mapping. Until it is quoted from the video rather than paraphrased once, treat it as reported by one outlet, not confirmed by the room.

Why this is showing up now

The Extended Look itself showed a lot of running and none of the controller. The control questions started landing in creator Q&As a few days later, once the bigger systems (wanted level, Criminal Profile, romance, driving) had been written up. Sprint is a small fact. It is also one of the few that changes how the game will feel in your hands on November 19.

It does not change anything else on the features page. Stamina, wanted heat and the body system are separate. A stick click does not make the cops easier.
