How Long Is GTA 6? About 80 Hours, From the Only Person Who Has Said
Rockstar North's head of development says his own GTA 6 playthrough took about 80 hours, the main story plus optional goals. What that figure covers, where it came from, and why it is not a completion time.

One person has said how long GTA 6 takes, and the answer was about 80 hours. Rob Nelson, head of development at Rockstar North, told the New York Times that a playthrough of his own ran roughly 80 hours, covering the main story plus optional goals that carry consequences for the narrative. The interview published on August 27, 2026, the day of the Extended Look.
That is the whole basis for every “GTA 6 is 80 hours” headline you have seen. It is a real quote from a senior person who has finished the game, and it is not a completion time Rockstar has published. Nobody at Rockstar has released a story length, a mission count or a completionist estimate, and the company has said nothing about how long you should expect to play.
Where the number came from
| Link | Who | What they contributed |
|---|---|---|
| The source | Rob Nelson, head of development and co-studio head, Rockstar North | Said his playthrough took about 80 hours, main story plus optional goals with narrative ramifications |
| The publication | The New York Times, August 27, 2026 | Ran the interview as part of the press around the Extended Look |
| The relay | IGN, GamesRadar, TechRadar and most of the games press, August 27 and 28 | Turned one sentence about one playthrough into a length for the game |
Nelson gave the figure in the same run of press that produced the 30 FPS remark and the answer on first-person. All three arrived the same way: a named developer answering a question, in an outlet, with no Rockstar publication behind it.
Reporting on the interview places Nelson’s playthrough in February 2026, which would put it on a build nine months from release. We have not been able to confirm that detail against the interview itself, so treat the timing as reported rather than established.
What 80 hours includes, and what it does not
This is where the number gets misread in both directions.
In the run, on Nelson’s own description:
- The main story, start to finish.
- Some optional goals with narrative ramifications. Side content that feeds back into Jason and Lucia’s story, not the whole side-content catalogue.
Not established anywhere:
- How much of the optional content he did, or how much exists.
- The pure main-story time with nothing optional attached. It is lower than 80 and nobody has said by how much.
- Any completionist or 100 percent figure.
- Whether he played at a normal pace, or a developer’s pace.
That last one cuts both ways, and it is the reason this page does not treat 80 as your number. A developer knows every route, never gets lost, and never spends forty minutes failing a mission. He also stops to look at things a player would drive past, and replays what he is checking. There is no way to net those out from the outside.
How that compares to Rockstar’s other games
| Game | Main story | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Grand Theft Auto V (2013) | about 32 hours | HowLongToBeat community average |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018) | about 50 hours | HowLongToBeat community average |
| Grand Theft Auto VI (2026) | about 80 hours | One developer playthrough, main story plus some optional goals |
The comparison is useful and slightly unfair. The first two are thousands of finished playthroughs averaged after release. The third is one run by one person before release, self-reported, with an undefined amount of side content folded in. They point the same way, which is that GTA 6 is the longest game Rockstar has made, but they are not the same kind of measurement and this page will not pretend otherwise.
The honest version: GTA 6 is comfortably longer than Red Dead Redemption 2, and how much longer is not yet knowable.
Why it runs this long
Nothing here is padding, on the evidence so far. The length comes from the same places the Extended Look put its weight.
- Two protagonists. Jason and Lucia are played separately and together, with switching between them, which historically means missions built twice over. See gameplay features.
- Optional content that changes the story. Nelson’s phrase, “narrative ramifications”, is the tell. Side content that alters the narrative is content people finish rather than skip.
- A world that costs time to cross. Leonida is the largest map Rockstar has built. What is actually established about its size, and what is leak, is on the map size page.
- More than the team can hold in one head. Nelson told IGN: “The game is so big, I don’t know that there’s anybody on the team that knows all of it.” That is not a play-time figure. It is the studio describing its own scale rather than selling it.
- Density instead of filler. The number Rockstar promoted all week is animation count: more than 600,000 animations, against roughly 55,000 in GTA 5 and 300,000 in Red Dead Redemption 2. That is a measure of how much specific behaviour is in the world, and specific behaviour is what makes an hour take an hour.
What nobody has said
Worth naming, because these are the gaps that get filled with invention before launch:
- No mission count. GTA 5’s in-game checklist lists 69 story missions. GTA 6 has no published figure, and the lists circulating come from the leaked build.
- No completionist figure, no collectible counts, no 100 percent checklist.
- No chapter count. Nelson told Trois Couleurs the game is “set over chapters” as a way the team moves players through the map. He did not say how many, whether they appear in a menu, or whether they split by protagonist. The quote, and the limit on it, is on the chapters leak entry.
- No difficulty or pacing options that would change a play time.
- No online mode, so no online hours. GTA 6 is single-player at launch, and GTA Online continues on GTA 5.
What would change this page
We rewrite this the moment any of the following exists:
- A Rockstar statement or store listing with a length, a mission count or a completion structure.
- Review coverage after the embargo lifts, which is the first time people outside Rockstar finish the game and say how long it took.
- HowLongToBeat data after November 19, 2026, which is the only figure here that will ever be an average rather than an anecdote.
Until then the accurate sentence is the one at the top: one Rockstar developer finished it in about 80 hours, including optional content, and the company has published nothing.

Frequently asked
How long is GTA 6?
About 80 hours, for one playthrough by one Rockstar developer. Rob Nelson, head of development at Rockstar North, told the New York Times in an interview published August 27, 2026 that finishing the game took him roughly 80 hours, covering the main story and some optional goals that carry narrative consequences. Rockstar has published no official completion time.
Is the 80 hours just the main story?
No, and that is the part most headlines dropped. Nelson described the main story plus optional goals with narrative ramifications, which means his run included side content. Nobody has said how much of it, so the pure main-story number is smaller than 80 and no one outside Rockstar knows by how much.
How long will it take to 100 percent GTA 6?
Unknown. There is no published checklist, no collectible count and no mission count, so any completionist figure circulating now is invented. For scale, HowLongToBeat's completionist average for Red Dead Redemption 2 is around 189 hours against a roughly 50 hour main story, and GTA 6 is the bigger game by every measure Rockstar has given.
Is GTA 6 longer than Red Dead Redemption 2?
On the only figures available, yes. HowLongToBeat's community average puts Red Dead Redemption 2's main story at about 50 hours, and the one GTA 6 playthrough anyone has described ran about 80. Those two numbers were produced in completely different ways, so treat it as a strong hint rather than a measurement.
Did Rockstar officially confirm that GTA 6 is 80 hours long?
No. A named Rockstar developer described his own playthrough in a newspaper interview. That is not a Newswire post, a store listing or a specification, and Nelson did not present it as a target length for players. The distinction matters because the same figure is being reported as if Rockstar had announced it.
How many missions does GTA 6 have?
Rockstar has not said, and no credible count exists. For scale, GTA 5's in-game checklist lists 69 story missions. Any GTA 6 mission list you find before launch is either from the leaked build or made up, and we carry neither.
How long is GTA 6 compared to GTA 5?
Roughly two and a half times, on the numbers available. HowLongToBeat puts GTA 5's main story at about 32 hours on community averages. The GTA 6 figure of about 80 hours comes from a single developer playthrough that also included optional content, so the two are not measured the same way.
How long is GTA 6 Online?
There is no GTA 6 Online. Rockstar describes GTA 6 as a single-player game at launch on November 19, 2026, and GTA Online continues separately on GTA 5. No online mode, and therefore no online play time, has been announced.
