How long is the GTA 6 Extended Look?

26 minutes and 49 seconds. That is the duration declared in the metadata of Rockstar's own YouTube upload, PT26M49S. On the night nobody had that: Netflix listed 26 minutes, its player read 27, and every figure that circulated beforehand, including the widely repeated 20 minutes, was wrong.

Did the GTA 6 Extended Look show gameplay?

Yes, and it is the first time Rockstar has ever shown GTA 6 being played. Note Rockstar's own wording: it calls the film in-game footage captured entirely on PlayStation 5, and never uses the word gameplay or the word trailer. In-game footage covers cutscenes as well as play, and no split between the two has been published.

Where can I watch the GTA 6 Extended Look for free?

On the Rockstar Games YouTube channel and at rockstargames.com/VI. The free release went out at 9:00 p.m. ET on August 27, six hours after the Netflix premiere. No account and no subscription are needed.

Do I need Netflix to watch the GTA 6 Extended Look?

No. Netflix only had it first. The 3:00 p.m. ET premiere was behind the paywall for six hours, after which the same film went out free on Rockstar's own channels.

What was confirmed in the GTA 6 Extended Look?

A six-star wanted level, police who track your description rather than showing as dots on the minimap, a karma indicator, instant switching between Jason and Lucia when they are together, and a body system where food and exercise change how the characters look.

Is the Extended Look the same as GTA 6 Trailer 3?

No, and Rockstar never called it a trailer. At nearly 27 minutes of mostly gameplay it is a different kind of thing from the two cinematic trailers, though much coverage labelled it Trailer 3 anyway.

Did the Extended Look change the GTA 6 release date?

No. GTA 6 releases on November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, and Rockstar reaffirmed the date the night before the showing.

Is this the last GTA 6 reveal before launch?

No. Take-Two chief executive Strauss Zelnick called August 27 one of the hors d'oeuvres, with appetizers, a main course and dessert still to follow before the November release.

GTA 6 Extended Look: Everything Rockstar Showed, and How to Watch It

Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look aired on Thursday, August 27, 2026. It ran 26 minutes and 49 seconds, it was captured entirely from in-game footage on a PlayStation 5, and it was the first time Rockstar has ever let the public watch Grand Theft Auto VI being played.

It went out twice on the same day: on Netflix at 3:00 p.m. ET, behind the paywall, and then free on the Rockstar Games YouTube channel and rockstargames.com/VI at 9:00 p.m. ET. The free version is the same film. Netflix had it first, not exclusively.

Rockstar’s own description, in a three-sentence Newswire post, is worth quoting exactly, because it never says “gameplay” and never says “trailer”:

Captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5, this extended look at Grand Theft Auto VI showcases the biggest, most immersive evolution of the series yet.

There is a much better looking version than YouTube’s

Rockstar also put the film on its own site as a direct download of about 14.2 GB, running at roughly 70 Mbps. That is many times the bitrate YouTube and Netflix deliver, and the difference is visible: the compressed streams smear the dark interiors and the crowd scenes, which are exactly the parts worth looking at. Anyone reading detail out of individual frames should be reading it out of this file rather than out of a stream.

It costs nothing and needs no account, same as the YouTube version. It is a 14 GB download, so it is a poor idea on a metered connection.

What was in it, in short

Three mission sequences, with free-roam and activity footage cut between them. No presenter, no narration, straight into gameplay.
A six-star wanted level, the first since 2009, sitting on top of a rebuilt system: the police work from a description of you rather than appearing as dots on the minimap, and icons under the stars show what they know.
The Criminal Profile, Rockstar’s morality system, which it says explicitly is not Red Dead Redemption 2’s honor because there is no right or wrong in it.

Careful with the sourcing, because most coverage is not. Rockstar ran three press channels that day: the film, hands-off demonstrations at Rockstar North where head of development Rob Nelson played for around 30 minutes, and two magazine features, in Dazed on August 26 and the New York Times on the 27th. Most of the systems being attributed to the Extended Look were actually explained in the second and third, not shown in the first. Our write-up separates them.

The runtime claims were all wrong

Four figures circulated between August 7 and August 24, and none of them was right. The number is now checkable rather than reported: Rockstar’s own upload declares a duration of PT26M49S.

The lesson is the one we wrote before the number existed: a screenshot of a platform page is not a source, and a support agent has no access to unreleased partner marketing. The only reliable version of this fact arrived from the company hosting the file, on the page that hosts it.

Why it was on Netflix at all

Both companies called the arrangement a first. Netflix describes it as a “first-of-its-kind” partnership, and Take-Two chief executive Strauss Zelnick called it “a first-of-its-kind venture” on the company’s August 7 earnings call, adding that Rockstar arranged it and declining to say whether Netflix paid for the window.

The paywall drew criticism for six hours and then stopped mattering, which is roughly what the structure was designed to do.

Was this “Trailer 3”?

Rockstar never used the phrase, and after the fact the label looks worse than it did before. A trailer is two minutes of cinematic. This was nearly 27 minutes of mostly gameplay with three set-pieces in it. Coverage called it Trailer 3 anyway.

The press previews were hands-off

Rockstar ran preview sessions around the showing, and it is worth knowing what they were. Nobody played. Reporting describes a demonstration of around 30 minutes at Rockstar North, presented by head of development Rob Nelson, in front of a very small number of journalists.

So the previews published on the 27th are a second description of footage, not an account of how the game handles. That distinction survives every superlative in them, and it will stand until someone holds a controller in public.

They did answer two things the film was silent on, both from the Rockstar North session: 30 frames per second on the current console build, and no full first-person mode at launch. What is still not answered

The showing was 26 minutes about how the game plays, and silent on almost everything about how it ships:

No install size and no unlock hour.

What happens next

Zelnick’s “hors d’oeuvres” line is still the clearest signal: more is planned before November 19. Nothing further has been dated. The confirmed calendar is short.
