How Big Is the GTA 6 Map Compared to GTA 5?

Rockstar has never published a size for either map, so every comparison is a fan measurement. Here is where the estimates come from, why they disagree, and what the trailers actually show.

By Thomas Kraaibeek · Updated August 27, 2026

Rockstar has not published a size for the GTA 6 map, and it never published one for GTA 5 either. That is the part most comparisons skip. Every “GTA 6 is 2x GTA 5” headline divides one fan estimate by another fan estimate, and the error bars on both are large. What Rockstar has said is that Leonida is its largest world to date. Everything more specific than that is measurement, not fact.

That survived August 27, 2026, though it was a close-run thing. Rockstar staff gave out ratios to two outlets that day and gave none to a third, and the third was the one interviewing the head of development directly. The detail is below.

Where the estimates come from

Fans size an unreleased map three ways, and each produces a different answer:

  • Coastline tracing. Line up trailer shots with the real Florida coast, since Leonida follows it closely, and scale from there. This tends to produce the largest numbers, because it counts open water and land you may never be able to reach.
  • Drive-time timing. Time a vehicle crossing a known stretch in the trailers, assume a speed, and multiply. Sensitive to a guess about speed and to the fact that trailer footage is cut, not real-time.
  • Landmark triangulation. Place confirmed locations relative to each other and interpolate. The most conservative method, and the one that produces the lower end of the range.

Those three approaches land anywhere from about 1.5 times GTA 5 to nearly 3 times, which is the honest answer: a range, not a multiplier. When a site states 2.1x as a fact, it has picked one method and dropped the caveat. Our verdict on that specific claim sits on the leak tracker.

The GTA 5 yardstick is itself a guess

The number everyone measures against, roughly 49 square miles or 127 square kilometres for GTA 5, is community mapping, not a Rockstar spec. It also includes a lot of ocean. Los Santos and Blaine County together are a fraction of that total, which is why GTA 5 feels much smaller on foot than the headline figure suggests.

The same will be true of Leonida. It has the Leonida Keys trailing off the southern tip and a Gulf coast on the other side, so a coastline-based measurement will sweep in a large amount of water that is traversable by boat and empty of anything else.

Why square miles is the wrong question

Two maps of identical area can take wildly different amounts of time to cross and to exhaust. What actually changes how big a world feels:

  • Density. GTA 5’s Los Santos packs more into a square mile than most of RDR2’s territory. Rockstar’s own copy for Vice City describes a dense metropolis, and both trailers spend most of their runtime there.
  • Interiors. A building you can enter multiplies the usable space of a block without adding a single square metre to the map.
  • Verticality. High-rises, causeways and elevated roads add navigable space that a flat area measurement misses entirely.
  • Water as a route, not a wall. Trailer 2 shows airboats, boats and jet skis. In Grassrivers and the Keys, water is how you get places, so it counts as playable space rather than as filler between land masses.

The useful comparison at launch will be how long it takes to drive corner to corner and how much of the map you have a reason to return to, not the number of square miles.

What the trailers do establish

Six officially named regions, covering a dense coastal city, a wetland interior, an agricultural belt, a faded Gulf-coast town, an island chain and a forested national park in the north. That mix is more environmental variety than any previous entry in the series, and it is the strongest available evidence that the world is substantially larger than GTA 5’s, even without a number attached to it.

August 27, 2026: three numbers in one day, and none of them official

The Extended Look came with a coordinated press push, and map size came up in three places with three different answers.

WhereThe figure
The New York TimesThree times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2
Kotaku, relaying the creator TGG relaying Rob NelsonTwo times GTA 5, three times Red Dead Redemption 2, Vice City two times Los Santos, eleven times Los Santos with surroundings
IGN, interviewing Rob Nelson directlyNo figure. Nelson says only that it is “a big map, a very big map”

The third row is the one to trust, and it is the one nobody will quote. It is a direct interview with the head of development, and in it he declines to give a number. The chain behind the eleven-times figure runs through a paraphrase of an unrecorded conversation, and it is not obviously consistent with the other numbers printed beside it.

One figure from the same reporting does hold up, and it is a better measure of the thing people actually mean when they ask how big the map is: more than 600,000 animations, against roughly 55,000 in GTA 5 and 300,000 in Red Dead Redemption 2. Area is cheap. What fills it is not.

We rate the two-times claim on the tracker, and it stays a rumor.

When there will be a real answer

At launch, from players. Rockstar has never published a map size for any Grand Theft Auto game, and August 27 did not change that, whatever the headlines said. The first credible figures will come from people driving the borders with a stopwatch, the same way GTA 5’s did. We will put the measured numbers on this page when they exist, and we will say who measured them and how.

Frequently asked

How big is the GTA 6 map in square miles?

Rockstar has not published a figure, and it never published one for GTA 5 either. Every square-mileage number you see for both games is a fan measurement, so a comparison between them is one estimate divided by another.

Is the GTA 6 map twice the size of GTA 5?

Unconfirmed. Community estimates run from about 1.5 times to nearly 3 times the size of GTA 5 depending on the method used, which is a spread wide enough to tell you the method matters more than the answer. Rockstar has only described Leonida as its largest world to date.

Is the GTA 6 map bigger than Red Dead Redemption 2?

Nobody knows. RDR2 is commonly measured by fans at around 75 square miles, larger than GTA 5, but since GTA 6 has no measured size at all the comparison cannot be made yet.

How big is the GTA 5 map?

Rockstar never said. The figure repeated everywhere, roughly 49 square miles or 127 square kilometres, comes from community mapping and includes a large amount of open water. The land you can drive on is a fraction of it.

Does the GTA 6 map include Liberty City?

No. Travel to Liberty City is a recurring rumor with nothing official behind it. We track it, with our verdict, on the leak tracker.

When will we know the real size?

Realistically at launch, when players measure it. Rockstar has not published a map size for a Grand Theft Auto game before, and nothing suggests it will start now.
