GTA 6 is set over chapters

The claim

GTA 6's story is split into chapters the way Red Dead Redemption 2 was.

Confirmed Officially confirmed by Rockstar, or a verified real-world event.

Confirmed on August 27, 2026, in a sentence that sat in public for more than two weeks before it was treated as news. Rob Nelson, head of development at Rockstar North, told Trois Couleurs: “The game is set over chapters, which also help us figure out how the game is going to move.” GameRant isolated the line on September 13. The quote is the confirmation. The Red Dead Redemption 2 comparison is not.

The claim first circulated as a leak. Kotaku, on September 2, listed “the game is split up into chapters like RDR2” among details the account GameRoll posted in June 2025 that later matched official material. We do not have GameRoll’s original post dated to the day, so this entry is dated to Nelson’s interview, which is the confirmation we can timestamp. The rating is about what he said, not about reconstructing a tweet.

What Nelson actually said

The line sits in an answer about process, not about a menu. Nelson described Rupert Humphries writing a page and a half of outline that moves Jason and Lucia from place to place, then the team hanging tent-pole missions on those beats, then asking whether the player can go off the rails. Chapters, in that paragraph, are a tool for pushing and pulling people through Leonida.

The full stretch, from the English version of the interview:

This one is going to be the catalyst that is going to move them from this part of the game to that part of the game. The game is set over chapters, which also help us figure out how the game is going to move.

That is enough to retire the rumor. A named Rockstar lead said the story is set over chapters. It is not enough to import Red Dead Redemption 2’s six chapters and two epilogues, a pause-menu chapter select, or a split by protagonist. None of those are in the interview.

The same sitting is the source for the two-protagonist rationale. The chapters sentence is not a new interview. It is a line we missed. The news write-up is Nelson said GTA 6 is set over chapters.

The three gaps

  • Did anyone at Rockstar say “chapters”? Yes. Nelson, on the record, August 27.
  • Does that mean a Red Dead-style chapter list the player can see? Not established. He described structure. He did not describe a UI.
  • How many? Not said. Write-ups this week have attached Red Dead Redemption 2’s six-plus-two. That is a comparison, not a figure.

The June 2025 leak used the stronger wording, “like RDR2.” Nelson confirmed the weaker and more useful half. That is why the rating is confirmed rather than partly true: the thing that needed an official mouth was whether chapters exist at all. The likeness is still an inference, and this page will keep saying so.

What would add to this

A chapter count, named chapters, a pause-menu screenshot, or a reviewer describing acts after the embargo. Until then, the length page’s old line that there was “no chapter or act structure” is the thing that needed correcting, and the rest of the claim can wait.
