The GTA 6 Extended Look drew 31.1 million Netflix views in four days
Netflix's weekly Top 10 for August 24 to 30 puts Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look at 31.1 million views, number one on the English film list in 87 of 93 tracked countries. A view here is hours watched divided by runtime, not a play-start. The film had only Thursday through Sunday of that week.
Netflix counted 31.1 million views of Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look in the week of August 24 to 30. The 27-minute film, which premiered on the service on Thursday, August 27, topped the English film list and was number one in 87 of the 93 countries Netflix tracks. The numbers are Netflix’s own, published on September 1 in its weekly Top 10 and the accompanying Tudum write-up.
It had four days of that week, not seven, and the first six hours were exclusive. Second place, The Whisper Man, had 23.2 million views and a full week.
The film itself, what was in it, and where to watch it free, are on everything Rockstar showed and the Extended Look guide.
The number, and what Netflix means by a view
| Views | Runtime Netflix lists | Hours viewed | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look | 31.1 million | 27 minutes | 14.0 million |
| The Whisper Man | 23.2 million | 1 hour 54 minutes | 44.1 million |
| The Last House | 5.8 million | 1 hour 52 minutes | 10.9 million |
Netflix defines a view as total hours viewed divided by runtime. One household watching the film twice looks the same as two households watching it once. YouTube counts a view when playback starts. The two figures are not comparable, and the table above is why: The Whisper Man lost on views and won on hours, because it is a two-hour movie and the Extended Look is 27 minutes.
The 14 million hours check against the 31.1 million views at a 27-minute runtime. Netflix rounded the length. Rockstar’s YouTube upload is 26 minutes and 49 seconds.
Among the four weekly lists Netflix publishes (English films, non-English films, English TV, non-English TV), 31.1 million is also higher than the other three number ones that week: Facing El Chapo at 20.7 million, Death of the Pastor’s Wife at 19 million, and Blood Sacrifice at 9.1 million.
What this is not
It is not a YouTube number, and it is not a global audience for the showing. When Netflix published the chart, Rockstar’s own YouTube upload was around 17 million play-starts, with other channels hosting the same film on top of that. Those keep climbing. The Netflix figure is a closed week.
It is also not evidence that the August leaks did or did not hurt the reveal. A 31 million-view week tells you people still watched. It does not tell you how many of them had already seen seventeen clips of an older build.
How the week was built
The reporting window is Monday to Sunday. The premiere was Thursday at 3 p.m. ET, behind the paywall, then free on YouTube and rockstargames.com/VI six hours later. So the Netflix count is Thursday through Sunday only, and part of Thursday was the only window in which Netflix had the film to itself.
On the night, Netflix had already buckled. Downdetector peaked at 3,129 reports at 2:49 p.m. ET, eleven minutes before start. Sensor Tower later put US mobile viewership 35% above the same hour in the prior twelve weeks. Both of those measured the crush at the door, not how many people finished the film. The Top 10 number is the first figure that does.
Rockstar approached Netflix for the window, not the other way round. Strauss Zelnick said so on the August 7 earnings call and declined to say whether Netflix paid. That has not changed.
