Cars in GTA 6 run out of fuel and have to be refuelled
The claim
GTA 6 vehicles consume fuel, and you refuel and repair them at gas stations for money.
Partly true Some of this holds up, some does not, or it is subject to change.
Updated August 28. Partly confirmed, and not by the film. Two things happened on August 27 and they point in opposite directions.
The Extended Look does not contain it. Plenty of driving, and no roundup of the showing reports a fuel gauge, a station stop or a refuelling prompt. Gas stations appear only as places to rob. Take care with what that means: a 26-minute promotional cut is edited to look exciting, and stopping for petrol is the least exciting thing a driving game can show.
The press previews do contain it. Journalists at Rockstar’s own hands-off demonstrations report that cars need fuel, and that a car you steal may arrive with very little in the tank. That is a different class of evidence from a leaked build: it comes out of a session Rockstar ran, describing the current game. It is still a journalist’s sentence rather than a Rockstar quote, and it says nothing about prices, repairs or how fast a tank drains.
So the rating moves to partly true. Cars consuming fuel is supported. The service menu with prices, which is the specific claim below, is still leak-only.
Footage that leaked on August 22, 2026 shows a car being refuelled at a gas station, with a service menu offering refuel and repair at listed prices. A fuel gauge had already been spotted on the HUD in earlier clips from the same leak, across a car and a semi-truck.
We do not host or link the footage. This is about the claim, which is the best-evidenced thing to come out of the August leak and still not a confirmed feature.
What was actually seen
- A gauge on the HUD after entering a vehicle, described as depleting with driving, alongside a second readout that may be engine condition.
- A stop at a branded station, reported as Xero, with the option to open a services menu on foot beside the pump.
- Two services with prices, reported as refuel at $32 and repair at $2,429, the second on a supercar that had been driven hard.
That is more than an icon. A gauge, a station, a menu and two priced services is a working loop rather than a stray HUD element, which is why this claim is stronger than most of what came out of the same footage.
Why it is still a rumor
- Rockstar has said nothing. No trailer, no Newswire post, no feature list mentions fuel.
- The build is not current. Reporting puts it around 2025. A systems feature can be cut between a test build and release, and fuel is a classic candidate: easy to build, hard to tune, easy to remove if playtesting hates it.
- A working loop is not a mandatory loop. This is the part almost every headline skips. Everything observed is equally consistent with fuel being an option, a difficulty setting, a mission-specific constraint, or something that only applies to certain vehicles.
The interesting question is not whether, it is how
The community argument that broke out over this is about design, and both halves of it are reasonable. Fuel gives a big map economic weight, makes long drives a decision, and is already standard on the GTA roleplay servers a lot of players now come from. It also risks being an interruption tax on the thing GTA is actually about, which is getting in a car and going.
Rockstar has form on the compromise. Red Dead Redemption 2 shipped deep simulation systems and put several of them on the player’s terms. If fuel ships, a toggle or a light-touch implementation is at least as likely as a hard rule, and none of the leaked footage tells you which one this is.
One more caution about the prices. $32 and $2,429 are numbers from an unfinished build. Economy values are tuned to the last minute, and a repair bill on a supercar in a 2025 test build is not a statement about what anything costs in November.
What would settle it
Any current Rockstar footage of a HUD, or the first hands-on previews. The Extended Look on August 27 is the first opportunity. A fuel gauge is small, and a showing built around driving would be an odd place to hide one.
If it is confirmed, it goes into our features page sourced officially, and the vehicle database picks it up from there.
