GTA 6 has a six-star wanted level

Confirmed on August 27, 2026. Rockstar showed a six-star wanted meter in Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, its first public gameplay footage. Every mainline Grand Theft Auto before this capped at five stars. There is now a sixth.

The claim first reached us from leaked footage on August 18, and we rated it a rumor for nine days on the grounds that a HUD element in an old build proves nothing about the shipping game. That caution was right at the time and it is now spent. The rest of this page is the record of how the claim got from there to here, because the route matters more than the destination.

We do not host or link the leaked footage. What follows is about the claim, not the file.

What Rockstar showed, precisely

In the chase sequence of the Extended Look, the wanted meter on screen has six star slots where every mainline Grand Theft Auto before it had five. Outlets watching the premiere also describe icons underneath the stars indicating what the police believe you did, which is new to the series and separate from the star count itself.

Be precise about the limit here, because most coverage is not. No outlet reported the meter actually filling to six. What was visible is a six-slot meter with some of the slots lit. Both of the outlets that reported it in detail said plainly that they do not know what triggers the sixth star or what happens at it. GTA 5’s meter had five slots and five was the ceiling, so a six-slot meter is strong evidence of a six-star ceiling, and that is what we are rating. It is not evidence about what the sixth star costs you.

The showing also established what the sixth star sits on top of, and it is a bigger change than the star. Police no longer appear as dots on the minimap. The game tracks a description of you: appearance, clothing, weapon, and the vehicle you fled in. A sixth star in that system is not simply more helicopters. It is the top of an escalation built around what the police know.

What was actually seen

In the second of the two leaked clips, Jason kills a delivery driver during a roadside fight and police respond. Reporting on the clip describes the wanted meter reaching six stars, with the killing itself registering as two.

Journalists who watched it considered the footage authentic-looking while stating they could not confirm it. Rockstar settled that on August 26 by calling the leak “videos of Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay”.

The three gaps, and how each closed

While this was a rumor, the claim had to clear three separate gaps. It is worth keeping the list, because two of them closed and one of them never did.

• Is the footage genuine? Answered on August 26, when Rockstar acknowledged the leak.
• Is it current? Never answered, and it did not need to be. The leaked build is a 2025 one with placeholder interface elements, so the meter in it was never evidence about November. What settled this claim was Rockstar showing the same thing in its own current footage, which is a different piece of evidence that happens to agree.
• Does a sixth star mean what people think? Still open, and not by a little. Nobody has seen the meter reach six, in a leak or in official footage. Nobody knows what triggers it or what changes at that level. The slot exists. Everything past that is people filling in a blank.

That third gap is the one to hold on to. A confirmed HUD element is not a confirmed difficulty tier, and the coverage will not make that distinction for you.

The thing about a dozen outlets agreeing

By the day after the leak, this was reported almost everywhere. That reads as corroboration and is not. Every one of those articles is describing the same clip. It is a single piece of evidence being read many times, and each retelling makes the claim sound better established than the evidence underneath it has become.

Independent confirmation would mean a second, unconnected source, or Rockstar. Neither exists. Rockstar acknowledging that videos leaked is not Rockstar acknowledging a sixth star.

The nine days in between are the useful part of this entry. A claim can be true and badly evidenced at the same time, and for nine days that is exactly what this was: correct, and resting on a screen capture from a build nobody could date. Being right in the end does not retroactively make the evidence good, and the next leak claim that looks this convincing will have to clear the same three gaps.
