GTA 6 has a stamina meter

The claim

GTA 6 has a stamina bar that drains during melee combat and sprinting, with an on-screen penalty when it empties.

Rumor Circulating widely but not officially confirmed. Treat with caution.

Updated August 27. Not settled. The Extended Look ran 26 minutes and 49 seconds and no coverage of it reports a stamina meter either way. That is not evidence against the claim. It is 27 minutes of edited footage in which a small HUD element can be present, absent, or simply never framed. Rockstar did confirm a related system, and it is the more interesting one: exercise builds visible muscle and food changes the character’s weight, the San Andreas body system returning. A body that gets fitter is a strong hint that fitness is modelled somewhere. It is not a stamina bar. This stays a rumor.

Leaked August 2026 footage shows what outlets described as a stamina meter draining as Jason throws punches, and reporting describes the screen edges darkening into a vignette once it empties. That is the whole of the evidence.

We do not host or link the footage. This entry rates the claim.

What was actually seen

Two observations, both from the roadside fight clip:

  • A meter depletes during melee, through punches and through beating the downed driver with a wrench, until it reaches zero.
  • At zero, the edges of the screen vignette, which usually signals a penalty of some kind rather than decoration.

Separately, a basketball minigame in the first clip awards a small attribute increase, transcribed by different outlets as “+2 Focus” or “+2% Focus”. The disagreement about the exact string is itself a reminder of what this evidence is: people reading small HUD text off a compressed screen capture.

Why this one is the most plausible claim in the leak

Worth saying, because we mark almost everything from this footage down. Grand Theft Auto has shipped stamina before. GTA San Andreas, GTA 4 and GTA 5 all had a stamina system of some kind, and GTA 5 tied skill levels including stamina to what each protagonist did. Red Dead Redemption 2 built cores and attribute growth into the same shape.

So this is not a new mechanic being claimed for the series. It is an existing mechanic being observed in an unreleased entry. That makes it far more likely to be real than, say, a morality system, which would be a first.

Plausible is still not confirmed.

What keeps it a rumor

  • Rockstar has never shown or stated it. Both trailers are cinematic, and no HUD has been shown officially.
  • The build is not current. Reporting points at roughly 2025, and meters, bars and vignettes are exactly the kind of thing that gets retuned or removed late.
  • The behaviour is unobserved. Nobody has seen what the penalty at zero actually is, whether the meter also governs sprinting and swimming, whether it grows with use, or whether it differs between Jason and Lucia.

The word “stamina meter” is doing a lot of work for something that has been seen draining once.

What would settle it

Any current gameplay from Rockstar with a HUD in it. The Extended Look on August 27 is the first chance, and even then it settles the question only if the showing includes real play rather than another cinematic cut.

Same clips, same discount: the six-star wanted level, the honor system and the vehicle fuel system. Context on the leak itself, including the cryptocurrency watermarked into it, is on the August 2026 leak.
