Leaked PS5 Pro Enhanced rules do not say GTA 6 runs at 4K 60, they say Rockstar gets to pick

A leaked copy of Sony certification guidelines, attributed to the YouTuber Moore's Law Is Dead, lists four routes to the PS5 Pro Enhanced label and a game needs only one of them. Coverage read the first route as a requirement and produced both a 4K 60 headline and a 4K 30 headline from the same document. Rockstar has still announced no PS5 Pro version of GTA 6.

By Thomas Kraaibeek

A leaked Sony document about the PS5 Pro Enhanced badge went around on September 5, and both headlines pulled out of it are wrong. One said the rules mean GTA 6 must run at 4K and 60 frames per second. The other said they point to 4K and 30. The document, as reported, does not require either, because it is a list of alternatives and a game qualifies by meeting one of them.

Underneath that there is a plainer fact that has not changed since August: Rockstar has announced no PS5 Pro version of Grand Theft Auto VI at all. No badge, no mode, no resolution, no frame rate. A leak about the rules of a label tells you what the label would cost. It does not tell you that GTA 6 is wearing it.

What leaked, and from whom

The guidelines are attributed to Moore’s Law Is Dead, the hardware leaker whose PS5 Pro specification video Sony hit with a copyright claim in 2024. TweakTown carried the guidelines on September 5, 2026, and Wccftech ran its own version the same week. Sony has published nothing.

As reported, a game earns the PS5 Pro Enhanced tag by doing any one of the following:

  • Target a stable 60 FPS at 2160p.
  • Raise the target resolution above the base PS5 version.
  • Raise the frame rate target above the base PS5 version.
  • Add new or higher quality ray tracing effects.

Read that list once and the two competing headlines explain themselves. TweakTown weighed the four routes and concluded Rockstar would take the resolution one, so it wrote 4K 30. Other outlets read only the first line and wrote 4K 60. The first line is the most demanding option on the menu, not the entry fee.

Why 60 on a Pro is the hard one

This is not a judgement about Rockstar. It is what the hardware is.

The PS5 Pro is a large GPU upgrade and a rounding error of a CPU upgrade. It keeps the same eight core Zen 2 design as the base PS5 and adds roughly 10 percent of clock speed, up to about 3.85 GHz in its high frequency mode. The GPU gains around two thirds more compute units, and PSSR handles upscaling.

Frame rate in a game like this is mostly a CPU problem. Traffic, pedestrians, physics, the wanted level logic and the simulation that runs while you are not looking at it all land on the processor, and a 30 FPS target means a 33.3 millisecond budget. Sixty means 16.7. Ten percent of clock does not close a gap that size, and no amount of GPU or upscaling closes it for you. That is the same reasoning behind Digital Foundry’s conclusion that a 60 FPS console GTA 6 is extremely unlikely, which is on our frame rate page in full.

The other three routes are exactly the ones a stronger GPU can pay for.

What is actually known about how GTA 6 renders

Two things, and both come from the base machine:

  • 30 FPS on console. Rob Nelson, head of development at Rockstar North, said so in the preview sessions around the Extended Look, published August 27. He framed it as where the game sits in this development period.
  • Native 1440p, upscaled to 4K. Digital Foundry measured the Extended Look footage at a native 1440p with no dynamic resolution scaling, upscaled by a simple spatial method. Netflix’s own listing said the footage was captured on a PlayStation 5, not a Pro. Asked about resolution, Nelson said he did not have the details.

If Rockstar does ship a Pro mode and does take the resolution route, native 2160p at 30 is the version of this story that fits every known number. That is a reasonable expectation. It is not an announcement, and nobody at Rockstar or Sony has made one.

Three ways this gets misread

What you will seeWhat is actually supported
”Sony requires GTA 6 to hit 4K 60 on PS5 Pro”The rules are a choice of four. Meeting one is enough
”Leak confirms GTA 6 at 4K 30 on PS5 Pro”A leaked Sony document says nothing about GTA 6. That number is an outlet’s inference
”GTA 6 is PS5 Pro Enhanced”Not announced. Rockstar has published no Pro feature list

The document is also unverified. It is a leaker’s copy of an internal Sony guideline, carried by enthusiast outlets, and Sony has neither confirmed nor denied it. Sony’s past copyright strike against the same leaker is circumstantial evidence that he has had real material before. It is not evidence about this file.

If you are buying hardware on the strength of it

Do not. The Pro sold out in the US after the Extended Look and resale listings reached $1,299 against a $899.99 list price, for a console with no announced GTA 6 benefit. Every current console runs the game, nothing is gated behind the Pro, and there are ten weeks until November 19. Our console requirements page has the model by model position.
