GTA 6 File Size: How Much Storage Will It Need?

Rockstar has not published a GTA 6 install size, so every number you have seen is an estimate. Here is the precedent, the usable space on each console, and what to clear now.

By Thomas Kraaibeek · Updated August 4, 2026

Rockstar has not published a file size for GTA 6. Any specific number in circulation, including the widely shared 200 GB figure, is a rumor rather than a spec. What is safe to plan around: this is a current-generation only release with no last-generation version holding it back, and every buyer downloads it, because even the boxed Standard Edition is a download code rather than a disc. Clearing space now costs nothing and removes the one launch-day problem that money cannot fix quickly.

What is actually confirmed

Nothing about the size. Rockstar has confirmed the November 19, 2026 release date and the platforms, and it has been selling pre-orders since June 25, 2026, but the storefront listings have not carried an install size. Publishers usually add it to the PlayStation Store and Xbox store pages in the weeks before launch, and it becomes unambiguous when preloads open on November 12, 2026. That is the outside date for finding out, and it is a week later than you want to be starting on storage.

The precedent, which is not a fact about GTA 6

Treat these as the shape of the problem, not as an answer:

  • GTA 5 on current consoles: roughly 90 GB.
  • Red Dead Redemption 2: roughly 120 to 150 GB, depending on platform and patch level.

Both grew after launch. GTA Online in particular pushed GTA 5 well past its original install over a decade of updates, which is the more useful lesson: whatever GTA 6 ships at, the number a year later will be larger.

One force pushes a GTA 6 install up: it targets PS5 and Xbox Series hardware only, so no asset budget is being held back to fit a 2013 console, and higher-resolution textures are the single biggest line item in any modern install. One force pushes back: both consoles decompress in hardware, so studios no longer duplicate assets across the drive to hide the seek times of a mechanical disk, which is why several recent games have shipped smaller than their last-gen predecessors. Which force wins here is not something anyone outside Rockstar knows yet.

What each console actually gives you

The number on the box is not the number you get. The operating system takes a cut:

ConsoleAdvertisedUsable
PS5 (original)825 GBabout 667 GB
PS5 (Slim and current models)1 TBabout 842 GB
PS5 Pro2 TBthe most headroom in the PS5 line
Xbox Series X1 TBabout 802 GB
Xbox Series S512 GBabout 364 GB
Xbox Series S (1 TB model)1 TBabout 800 GB

The 512 GB Series S is the tight one. A single Call of Duty install and two other large games account for most of that 364 GB, so on this console the question is not whether GTA 6 fits, it is what you are deleting to make room.

What to do before November 19

  1. Check your free space today. PS5: Settings, Storage. Xbox: Settings, System, Storage devices.
  2. Aim for around 200 GB free. That is our buffer rather than a published requirement: it covers an install at the top of the plausible range, a launch patch on top of it, and the working room a console needs to install anything at all.
  3. Archive rather than delete. On both consoles you can move a game to a USB drive and copy it back later without downloading it again. That is minutes instead of hours for anything large.
  4. If you are near full on a 512 GB Series S, decide now whether you are clearing games or buying storage. Expansion cards and NVMe drives get more expensive in the weeks before a major launch.

Adding storage, and what will not work

You cannot play a current-generation game from a plug-in USB drive. GTA 6 streams the open world of Leonida off fast internal storage, which is why the requirement exists at all. A USB drive is fine for archiving and nothing else.

  • PS5: a compatible M.2 NVMe SSD in the internal expansion slot. It needs a heatsink and a read speed of at least 5,500 MB/s to meet Sony’s requirement.
  • Xbox Series X and S: an official Storage Expansion Card, which slots into the back and performs like the built-in drive. Third-party cards from Seagate and Western Digital are the same standard.

Why the 200 GB number keeps circulating

It traces back to aggregator posts rather than to Rockstar, and it has been repeated long enough to look sourced. There is no Rockstar statement, no storefront listing and no press release behind it. It is a plausible guess that hardened into a fact through repetition, which is the same pattern as the map size claims we track on the leak tracker.

We will put the real figure on this page the day it is published, and it will be attributed to the storefront that published it.

Frequently asked

How many GB is GTA 6?

Rockstar has not published an install size, so there is no confirmed number. The widely shared 200 GB figure is a rumor. For scale only, GTA 5 is roughly 90 GB on current consoles and Red Dead Redemption 2 is roughly 120 to 150 GB.

Will GTA 6 fit on a 512 GB Xbox Series S?

A 512 GB Series S has about 364 GB usable, so it fits unless the install is extraordinary. The catch is that it has to fit alongside everything else already installed, and on that console most people will need to delete something first.

Can I install GTA 6 on an external USB drive?

No. Current-generation games must run from the internal SSD or, on Xbox, an official Storage Expansion Card. You can archive the game on a USB drive and copy it back later, which is faster than downloading it again, but you cannot play it from there.

Is the physical copy smaller than the digital one?

No, they are identical. The boxed Standard Edition is a download code rather than a disc, so every buyer installs the same files from the same servers.

Does the day-one patch add to the download?

Rockstar has not announced a launch patch. Large releases usually ship one, and on both consoles a patch downloaded after install is extra data on top of the preload, so leave headroom rather than clearing the exact install size.

When will the real file size be announced?

It normally appears on the PlayStation Store and Xbox store listings in the weeks before release, and it becomes unambiguous when preloads open on November 12, 2026. We update this page the day a storefront publishes it.
