The PS5 Pro sold out in the US after the Extended Look, and resellers want $1,300
Best Buy and Target ran dry within about 48 hours of the August 27 showing, and third-party listings on Amazon and Walmart reached $1,299 against a $899 list price. Rockstar has announced no PS5 Pro enhancements for GTA 6, and nobody has published sales data tying the stock-out to the game.
PlayStation 5 Pro stock went dry across major US retailers in the days after the Extended Look on August 27. Best Buy and Target both showed no first-party inventory, and on Amazon and Walmart the only listings left were third-party ones at up to $1,299, against Sony’s $899 list price.
The obvious explanation is the obvious one. It is also the one nobody has evidence for, and there is a worse problem underneath it: Rockstar has announced no PS5 Pro enhancements for GTA 6 at all.
What happened, and what is inferred
| Reported | Confirmed | |
|---|---|---|
| Best Buy and Target out of PS5 Pro stock | Yes, within roughly 48 hours of August 27 | Retailer pages, checkable at the time |
| Amazon and Walmart showing third-party listings only | Yes | Same |
| Resale asks of $1,299 to $1,368 | Yes | Listings, not completed sales |
| eBay sales up to about $1,200 | Yes | Completed sales |
| GTA 6 caused it | Assumed everywhere | No |
That last row is the story. No outlet reporting this has sales data attributing the demand to GTA 6. Sony does not publish daily console sell-through by retailer, and nobody has produced a figure for units moved before and after the 27th. What exists is a stock-out that happened after a very large gaming event, in a week when a lot of people were reminded a PlayStation 5 exists.
That is a reasonable inference. It is not a measurement, and the difference matters if you are about to spend $400 over list price on the strength of it.
The Pro has no announced GTA 6 benefit
This is the part that should stop anyone considering a resale price.
Rockstar has confirmed no PS5 Pro-specific enhancements for GTA 6. No resolution mode, no frame rate target, no feature list. What Rockstar has said is that the console build runs at 30 FPS, from Rockstar North head of development Rob Nelson in the preview sessions around the showing, and that the Extended Look itself was captured on a base PlayStation 5.
The reason a Pro is unlikely to change that on its own is architectural. The PS5 Pro pairs a substantially stronger GPU with a nearly identical CPU to the base machine. Frame rate in a simulation this dense is mostly a CPU problem, which is why Digital Foundry’s reading is that even a PC version will struggle to hold 60. A stronger GPU buys resolution and image quality. It does not buy double the frame rate in a game the CPU is holding back.
So the honest position on the Pro today:
- It will very probably look better. Higher resolution or a cleaner image is what the Pro does in most games, and PSSR exists.
- None of that is announced, and treating “likely” as “confirmed” is how people end up disappointed on November 19.
- 60 FPS is not on the table on any current console, Pro included, on anything Rockstar has said.
Our console requirements page has the model-by-model breakdown.
Update, September 11, 2026: the sales data now exists. NielsenIQ has UK PS5 sales up 33% week on week and Xbox Series X and S up 34% in the week of the showing. It also has the Switch 2 up about a third in that same week, for an unrelated reason, so the figure does not isolate GTA 6 as cleanly as the headlines did. See UK PS5 sales rose 33% the week of the Extended Look.
If you are buying a console for GTA 6
You need a PS5, a PS5 Pro, or an Xbox Series X or S. All of them run the game. No edition, bonus or feature is gated behind the Pro.
Paying $1,299 for an $899 console to play a game with no announced Pro features, at a frame rate Rockstar has already given as 30, is a bad trade. Stock-outs like this have historically resolved in weeks, and there are still eleven weeks until November 19. If you want a Pro, waiting costs you nothing anyone can currently name.
