The GTA 6 DualSense pre-order broke PlayStation Direct, and eBay had listings within the hour
Pre-orders for Sony's two Grand Theft Auto VI controllers opened on September 10 and the PlayStation Direct storefront failed under the load: hour-long queues, error screens and checkouts that would not complete. Best Buy sold out of the white controller within minutes. Resellers listed them at $130 to $195 against an $84.99 list price. Sony has not said how many were made.
Sony’s two GTA 6 DualSense controllers went up for pre-order on September 10, 2026, and PlayStation Direct did not hold. Buyers reported queues past an hour, error screens instead of a cart, and checkouts that failed at the last step. Best Buy took the traffic better and still sold out of the white controller within minutes of going live.
We flagged the limited run two days ago and said to buy on the 10th from Sony or a named retailer. That advice held up, but it understated how narrow the window would be.
What happened on the day
| Retailer | How it went |
|---|---|
| PlayStation Direct | Queues over an hour, error screens, failed checkouts. The storefront was the bottleneck, not the stock |
| Best Buy | Handled the load better. White edition sold out within minutes |
| Walmart, GameStop | White edition still showing available around 10:30am ET, with cart errors reported |
| eBay | Reseller listings at $130 to $195 within the day, against $84.99 list |
The black controller is the harder one. It is a PlayStation Direct exclusive in the markets where Sony sells it that way, which means the single storefront that failed was also the only route to it in those countries.
The resale number is not the real number
Listings at $130 to $195 are asking prices, not sale prices. Anyone can list a controller at any number, and a large share of launch-day scalper listings never sell. Treat the eBay page as a measure of how many people are trying it, not of what the controller is worth.
The comparison with the PS5 Pro stock-out after the Extended Look is useful here, because that one went the same way: listings hit $1,299 against an $899.99 list price while the console remained purchasable at list from Sony within a few weeks. A pre-order that sells out in an hour is not the same as a product you cannot get. Sony is still taking orders through retailers in several markets, and there are ten weeks until launch.
What Sony has not said
- How many were made. “Limited quantities” is Sony’s wording and it has never been attached to a number. There is no public production figure for either colour.
- Whether there will be a restock. No second wave has been announced. Sony has restocked themed DualSense runs before, and has also let some sell out permanently.
- Anything about the storefront failure. No statement on the queue system or the checkout errors.
If you missed it
Nothing about this affects the game. A DualSense is a cosmetic accessory: the hardware inside is a standard controller, with the same haptics and adaptive triggers as the $74.99 model, and no back paddles or extra inputs. It is not required for anything in GTA 6 and it does not change how the game runs.
Two practical points. Retailer stock outside the United States opened at 10:00am local time and moved slower in several markets, so a regional storefront is worth checking before the resale market. And any listing that promises delivery before November 19 is describing a controller that does not ship until November 19, because both colours launch alongside the game.
What actually matters for playing on day one is on the console requirements page, and the editions comparison covers the $79.99 versus $99.99 question that a $84.99 controller keeps getting confused with.
