Stephen Root confirms he is in GTA 6, the first actor to do so, and Rockstar still has not
Asked by AP at the BAFTA TV Tea Party over Emmy weekend, Stephen Root said 'you're gonna see me in there', the first on-record confirmation from anyone in the GTA 6 cast. He did not say the name Brian Heder. That link still rests on his voice, which he says is what gave it away. Rockstar has published no cast list and has not commented.
Stephen Root has confirmed he is in Grand Theft Auto VI. Asked about the game by an AP reporter at the BAFTA TV Tea Party in Beverly Hills, one of the Emmy weekend parties, Root answered: “You’re gonna see me in there.” He was there as a nominee, for supporting actor in a comedy for Widow’s Bay.
He is the first actor to confirm a GTA 6 part on the record. Two things most of the headlines added that he did not say:
- He did not name the character. Every outlet reports him as Brian Heder, and that is almost certainly right. It is still their identification, made from his voice, not his words.
- Rockstar confirmed nothing. At least one headline read “GTA 6 officially confirms first voice actor”. Rockstar has not published a cast list, credited anyone, or commented on the clip.
What he said
The longer answer, as transcribed from AP’s clip:
“It’s coming out November 19, from the latest that I know of. But I think from the first rollout of GTA that they were doing, maybe almost a year ago, they had my character in there. And there were too many people that knew me from King of the Hill and my voice.”
He added that he was happy to be involved and that “it’s an amazing thing to look at.” Outlets transcribe the short line slightly differently, Game Rant has “you’re going to see me in that”, but the substance is the same everywhere.
Whether “see me” means performance capture as well as his voice, he did not say. It is also how actors talk about any role.
Why Brian Heder is still the answer
Root describes a character who appeared in an early rollout and a voice that people recognized. One character fits. Brian Heder, the Keys drug runner who runs a boat yard with his wife Lori, was introduced with the cast reveal alongside Trailer 2, and fans have attributed his voice to Root, Bill Dauterive and Buck Strickland on King of the Hill, for more than a year.
One small correction to his memory: that rollout was May 6, 2025, sixteen months ago rather than almost one. Trailer 1 in December 2023 introduced no named characters beyond Jason and Lucia, so there is no earlier rollout he could mean.
The honest status now is therefore two steps, not one. Root in the cast is confirmed, by Root. Root as Brian Heder is an inference his own explanation all but settles, and no credit backs it yet. Our Brian Heder page now says it that way.
The rest of the cast is still guesswork
Root’s answer confirms one name. It does nothing for the others that have circulated since the same trailer, including Bobby Moynihan for Cal Hampton. Those remain attributions by ear, with nothing from the actors and nothing from Rockstar, which has not named anyone for Jason or Lucia either.
That makes Root’s answer unusual rather than a sign that a cast announcement is coming. With a little over nine weeks to launch, the first credit anyone can check may still be the one that rolls at the end of the game.
The “no voice cast” line on what the Extended Look showed now carries the same update.
