Rumor Map Rated August 27, 2026

The GTA 6 map is twice the size of GTA 5

The claim

Leonida is around two to two and a half times the size of the GTA 5 map.

Rumor Circulating widely but not officially confirmed. Treat with caution.

Widely repeated, not officially confirmed. You will see “2x”, “2.1x”, even “2.5x the size of GTA 5” stated as fact. It is not. These are community estimates from trailer analysis and mapping projects, not a figure Rockstar has published.

Updated August 27, 2026. The Extended Look day produced numbers for the first time, and they do not agree with each other. Details below. The rating does not move, because the strongest evidence is that Rockstar declined to give a figure.

What Rockstar actually said

Rockstar has described the world as its largest to date. It has not released a full playable map, and it has not given a square mileage or a direct size multiple against GTA 5. Any exact number you read is an estimate.

Why the estimates vary

Fans measure using coastline shots, driving times in trailers, and the known real world analog of Florida. Those methods produce a range, which is why the numbers disagree, landing anywhere from around two to nearly three times GTA 5. A range of guesses is not a confirmation.

August 27 produced three answers on one day

Rockstar ran three press channels around the Extended Look: a Dazed cover feature, a New York Times feature, and hands-off demonstrations at Rockstar North for a handful of journalists and creators. Map size came up in all of them, differently.

IGN, interviewing Rob Nelson directlyNo figure at all. Nelson is quoted saying only that it is “a big map, a very big map”Direct interview with the head of development

Read that table before repeating any of the numbers in it.

The IGN line is the one that should carry the most weight and the one nobody will quote, because “very big” is not a headline. It is a direct interview with the person the other figures are attributed to, and in it he declines to put a number on the map.

The “eleven times Los Santos” figure is the one to distrust most. It arrives through the longest chain of custody of the three, it is not obviously consistent with the other numbers in the same paragraph, and it is the kind of number that spreads precisely because it is startling.

There is one thing here that is genuinely new and does not depend on any of this. The same reporting carries an animation count: more than 600,000 animations, against roughly 55,000 in GTA 5 and 300,000 in Red Dead Redemption 2. That is a measure of density rather than area, it is the kind of figure a studio can actually count, and it says more about the world than a multiplier does.

Our rating

Rumor, and a reasonable one. The map is clearly large, likely the biggest Rockstar has built, but the specific multiplier is unproven and the events of August 27 made that clearer rather than less clear. Three sanctioned press strands, three different answers, one of which is that there is no answer.

A number becomes confirmed when Rockstar publishes it somewhere it can be quoted from, not when it reaches a headline through a third party. For the confirmed regions, see the map overview and the locations database.
