Little Haiti

A Vice City neighborhood modeled on Miami's real Little Haiti, this district appears in community mapping but has not been named "Little Haiti" by Rockstar. Trailer footage shows Haitian cultural touches, including painted murals, in an area some coverage refers to as La Perle, so the exact in-game name is unsettled.

The real neighborhood sits in northeast Miami and was called Lemon City for most of its existence, a name that survives on a few street signs and in the local library branch. It became Haitian through two waves of arrivals, the first following the Duvalier years and the second through the 1980s.

The commercial spine along Northeast 2nd Avenue filled with botanicas, record shops, and restaurants serving griot and pikliz. The Caribbean Marketplace is the landmark most visitors photograph. The building dates to 1936 and sat unused until a 1984 design competition handed it to Charles Harrison Pawley, an architect born in Haiti to American parents, who drew on Haitian gingerbread houses and the Iron Market in Port-au-Prince. It opened as a market in 1990. The murals that Rockstar's footage appears to reference are a real and specific feature of the area rather than generic set dressing.

It is also one of the more contested pieces of ground in Miami, for a reason that has nothing to do with culture. Little Haiti sits on the Miami Rock Ridge at an elevation of about 6.9 feet, a little over two metres. That sounds like nothing until you set it against the barrier-island neighborhoods that flood on a high tide with no storm involved, and it makes Little Haiti some of the highest and driest land in the city.

Developers noticed. The resulting pressure on long-term residents has been widely reported as climate gentrification, and it is the reason storefronts and murals that read as decoration to a visitor are treated locally as territory being defended. A neighborhood whose main asset is elevation is a very 2020s kind of place, and it is more interesting material than the pastel-and-neon Miami the series has used before.

None of that has been confirmed as GTA 6 content. What Rockstar has shown is a district with visible Haitian cultural signalling. The name, the boundaries, and whatever the game does with the area remain unannounced.
