GTA 6 has already made a billion dollars in pre-orders

The claim

Grand Theft Auto VI has taken more than $1 billion in pre-orders since the window opened on June 25, 2026.

Debunked Contradicted by official information. This one does not hold up.

The firm whose own numbers this claim is built on has publicly called it absurd. The analytics company Newzoo published an estimate of GTA 6 pre-order spending in July 2026, watched it get inflated on social media into a billion-dollar figure, and said plainly that the game had not done a billion dollars in pre-orders that far out from launch.

What Newzoo actually estimated

Two numbers, both narrower than the version that travels:

  • About $180 million in digital pre-order spend across the United States and the five largest European markets, during the final week of June 2026.
  • Extrapolated to roughly $260 million globally for that same week.

Newzoo did call it the strongest pre-order campaign it has on record, and projected somewhere between 37 and 51 million units in launch week depending on how the curve behaves. Those are the striking findings, and they are impressive without needing to be inflated.

How $180 million turned into a billion

The distortion is mechanical, and it is the same shape as most viral numbers:

The estimateThe claim built on it
One week, late JuneRead as the running total since launch of pre-orders
Six marketsRead as worldwide
Digital spend onlyRead as all sales channels
A model, with stated caveatsRepeated as a measured fact

Stack those four and a modelled weekly figure for part of the world becomes a cumulative global total, which is how a number roughly five times too large ends up in a headline.

Take-Two has never published a pre-order number

This is the part worth keeping. In its fiscal Q1 2027 results on August 7, 2026, Take-Two disclosed no pre-order figure at all, and there is a structural reason it will not: a pre-order sits in deferred revenue until the game is delivered, so it does not become a reportable sale until the quarter containing November 19.

Chief executive Strauss Zelnick called the level of pre-orders “unprecedented and astonishing” on the earnings call and still declined to attach a number to it. He also noted that nothing has been sold yet, that pre-orders can be cancelled, and that the company does not know how they convert into sales.

So: any specific pre-order total you see is an outside estimate or an invention. There is no official number to compare it against, which is exactly the condition invented numbers thrive in.

What is fair to say

That pre-orders are running ahead of anything the industry has measured before. That comes from Newzoo’s data and from the publisher’s own language. What is not fair to say is any particular dollar total, including the billion, and including the $260 million if you drop the words “one week” and “six markets” from around it.
