GTA 6 misses the Golden Joystick Awards, and The Game Awards has not published its 2026 cutoff

Grand Theft Auto VI arrives on November 19, 2026, which is late enough to fall out of one awards season and awkwardly early in the next. The Golden Joystick Awards close public voting on October 30 and hand out trophies on November 11, eight days before anyone can buy the game. The Game Awards runs on December 10 and has not said which games qualify, because its own FAQ puts that announcement in the fall. The two shows that have published firm rules, BAFTA and DICE, both take the game, and both hold their ceremonies in 2027.

Nothing here is a Rockstar announcement. These are the awards bodies’ own dates, and the game is still unreleased.

The Golden Joysticks vote before the game exists

Future’s 44th Golden Joystick Awards run on November 11, 2026 in London, in what the organisers call a new format. The public voting calendar was published with it: nominees and the first voting round open on September 25, that round closes on October 23, and the Ultimate Game of the Year vote runs separately. The official categories page states it plainly:

“The shortlist will be revealed on 26th October, with voting running from 26th - 30th October.”

Ultimate Game of the Year is the category built to catch late releases, and it still closes 20 days before GTA 6 ships. There is no mechanism for a game nobody has played to appear on that shortlist.

One category does not care. Most Wanted Game is voted on exactly because the game is not out, and GTA 6 has won it twice, in 2024 and 2025. Trailer 2 also took Best Game Trailer in 2025. A third Most Wanted win on November 11 is possible. A Game of the Year win at that show is not.

The Game Awards has not set its date yet

The Game Awards returns on December 10, 2026 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. Geoff Keighley announced it on Bluesky in August:

“The countdown is officially on. December 10. Live from Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. Four months until The Game Awards. More details - and tickets - coming this fall.”

For the question everyone is actually asking, the show’s FAQ currently gives one answer:

“Eligibility dates for The Game Awards 2026 will be announced in Fall 2026.”

So the widely repeated claim that GTA 6 “just makes it” is a projection from last year, not a rule anyone has published. Last year the cutoff was November 21, 2025, and games released after that date were pushed to the 2026 show. The equivalent third Friday in November 2026 is November 20, which would put a November 19 launch inside the window by one day. That is arithmetic on a pattern. It is not the 2026 rule.

The cutoff is not the hard part

Eligibility and nomination are two different gates, and the second one closes earlier. The Game Awards explains its process like this:

“Each voting outlet completes a confidential, unranked ballot based on the collective and diverse opinion of its entire editorial staff, listing out its top five choices in each category.”

“Ballots are tabulated, and the five games that appear on the most ballots are put forth as nominees.”

Those ballots are due before the nominees are made public. In 2025 the nominations were announced on November 17, four days before that year’s eligibility cutoff of November 21. A game released in that gap was technically eligible and practically invisible, because the jury had already voted.

The show’s rules do describe the escape hatch:

“To meet our balloting deadlines, publishers or developers may provide advance or pre-release access to games for critical evaluation.”

That is the whole question for GTA 6. If more than a hundred outlets have played it before their ballots are due, it can be nominated. If they receive it at launch, or the day before, the 2026 nominee list is settled without it.

Rockstar has said nothing about review access. The only claim in circulation is a May 2026 report from the Brazilian outlet Portal Viciados that no review copies will go out at all and that reviewers would instead play on site under supervision. Rockstar has not confirmed that, no outlet has confirmed receiving anything, and it should be read as one unverified report. For reference, GTA 5’s review embargo lifted one day before release in 2013.

The 2027 shows are the safer bet

Three awards take the game without any of this ambiguity, and all three happen next year.

D.I.C.E. Awards, February 18, 2027 in Las Vegas. The rules require a product to be “publicly available in North America between January 1, 2026 and December 31, 2026”. November 19 is comfortably inside that. Submissions close December 8, 2026.
BAFTA Games Awards, April 14, 2027 in London. The published eligibility window is November 15, 2025 to November 19, 2026, so GTA 6 qualifies on the final day of it. Games released between August 1 and November 19 must enter by November 6, which means Rockstar has to file the entry almost two weeks before the game is out. The longlist follows on December 8, 2026 and nominations on March 11, 2027.
Game Developers Choice Awards, March 2, 2027 at GDC. The published rules still cover 2025 releases, where voting ran from roughly November to December of the release year. If that shape holds, GTA 6 sits in the 2027 edition with the same tight voting window as everywhere else.

That spread is why several outlets wrote this week that a clean sweep is already off the table. By the count those pieces use, Baldur’s Gate 3 and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 are the only games to take all five major Game of the Year trophies in one season. GTA 6 cannot match that, because one of the five is decided before it comes out.

What is not known

The Game Awards eligibility date for 2026. Not published.
Whether the jury will have pre-release access in time to vote.
Whether Rockstar enters BAFTA by the November 6 deadline. Entry there is not automatic, unlike The Game Awards, which states there is “no submission process”.
How the game reviews. No embargo, no score, no verdict exists yet, and this site will not pretend otherwise before launch day.
