Port Gellhorn

"Live Hard," reads Rockstar's tag for Port Gellhorn, "Leonida's forgotten coast." The official copy describes cheap motels, shut-down attractions, and empty strip malls that will not bring the tourists back, plus a new local economy the studio ties to malt liquor, painkillers, and truck-stop energy drinks. Outlets place it on Leonida's Gulf coast and read it as a Panama City Beach analogue.

Panama City Beach earned that reading twice over. For decades it was one of the largest spring break destinations in the country, until a run of violent incidents in 2015, among them a shooting and an assault recorded on video, pushed the city into banning alcohol along its eight miles of beach for the whole of March. Arrests that season came to 1,091, against 324 the year before. The crowds went elsewhere and did not come back, and businesses built for that volume were left with a season that no longer existed.

Then in October 2018 Hurricane Michael came ashore nearby as a Category 5 storm, the first to hit the continental United States at that strength since Andrew. Mexico Beach was largely destroyed and inland Panama City lost a substantial share of its housing stock. Recovery has been uneven, and the gap between the rebuilt beachfront and the neighbourhoods behind it is the kind of contrast Rockstar tends to build a map region around.

The name carries an echo too. Martha Gellhorn was a war correspondent who covered the Spanish Civil War and landed at Normandy by stowing away, and who spent part of her life married to Hemingway in Key West. Whether Rockstar intended the reference is unstated.

Port Gellhorn itself is confirmed. Rockstar named it and wrote the description. Its exact placement on the map, and the county said to contain it, come from community mapping rather than official material.
