The September 2022 GTA 6 leak
The claim
A hacker leaked more than 90 gameplay videos and source code from an unannounced Grand Theft Auto game in September 2022.
Confirmed Officially confirmed by Rockstar, or a verified real-world event.
This one is not a rumor. It happened. On September 18, 2022, a user posting as “teapotuberhacker” on GTAForums shared more than 90 clips of gameplay from the then unannounced Grand Theft Auto VI, along with portions of source code. It is widely considered one of the largest leaks in video game history.
What Rockstar said
The day after, on September 19, 2022, Rockstar Games publicly confirmed the intrusion. The studio said it did not expect disruption to its live services or long term development, and that it would introduce players to the next game properly when it was ready. That is exactly what happened over a year later with the first official trailer.
The person responsible
The breach was traced to Arion Kurtaj, a teenager from Oxford, England, linked to the Lapsus$ group. Reporting indicates access came through social engineering of an employee’s credentials. A UK court found Kurtaj responsible, and he was given an indefinite hospital order. In court, Rockstar described damages in the millions.
Why it stays on this tracker
We log the event because it is historically important and frequently misremembered. What we will never do is host, embed, or link the leaked footage or code. The material was obtained illegally and shows an early build that does not represent the finished game. For what is actually confirmed today, see the features breakdown and the release date.
